Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions): 

  • Responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of networking equipment and related server hardware.
  • Responsible for the planning and oversight of the cabling of classrooms, offices and buildings for campus network connectivity.
  • Reviews network needs and requirements to extend campus Wide Area Network to remote sites.
  • Performs and/or delegates resolution of network-related problems.
  • Performs periodic network analysis to design strategies for network growth and efficient utilization of network resources.
  • Investigates and adapts techniques and strategies utilized by UH ITS in its installation and administration of network resources in the hawaii.edu domain.
  • Follows methods to assure continuation of reliable services and adequate bandwidth.
  • Manages user accounts and directory services.
  • Monitors system performance of servers and/or associated systems.
  • Analyzes various suites of network services and resources such as E-Mail, Domain Name Services and Directory services, to identify areas in need of additions or modifications.
  • Analyzes security issues and pursues strategies as appropriate to college’s Internet domain.
  • Monitors impact of recent system modifications within the live environment and takes appropriate corrective measures.
  • Administers departmental specialty server systems in the context of connectivity to networked resources.
  • Devises and conducts pilot projects to test and evaluate prospective or required integration of new technology into existing IT infrastructure.
  • Consults with system administrators in integrating other departments server hosts running network operating systems such as Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, and Linux.
  • Program scripts for debugging, upgrading and documenting installed network equipment and related server packages.
  • Documents and diagrams system modifications and additions to various servers, routers, switches, wireless networking equipment, security appliances and related components.
  • Codes scripts as required in installing, customizing, or patching server-based software packages to implement features meeting site specific needs.
  • Designs additions or modifications to the suite of network services and resources for long-term scalability, security, and efficient management.
  • Plans, directs, trains, and supervises the work and learning tasks of cooperative education interns, student technical workers and other sub professional personnel.
  • Develops specifications for computer and network equipment purchases.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures regarding appropriate use of campus network services and resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Information & Computer Sciences, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Computing Engineering, Computer Network, Information & Communication Technology, Information Security and Assurance, Information Systems, System and Network Administration, or Computer Security and 3 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for Network or Server Support, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawai’i broadband system; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. 
  • Considerable working knowledge of networking, switching, routing and security hardware and operating systems as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with programming and scripting languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluate, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Experience with router, switching, and security systems administration.
  • Ability to setup and maintain both local and wide area networks.
  • Ability to prepare clear, detailed documentation and network diagrams.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Vendor certification in the administration of FortiNet, Cisco, Dell, Aruba network equipment.
  • Vendor certification for virtual environments such as VMWare, Microsoft Virtual Desktops.
  • Experience with Linux hardware and software operations.
  • Experience with the networking and administration of Windows, Mac, Linux computer systems.
  • Working knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as Python, PHP, JavaScript Perl, Bash, and Powershell.
  • Ability to setup and maintain cloud based networking and virtual services using Azure, Google, and AWS.
  • Working knowledge of DevOps tools such as ansible, docker, kubernetes, chef, terraform, Jenkins, and GitHub.
  • Ability to work with various types of cabling and perform good cabling techniques.
  • Working experience in an academic/governmental environment.
  • Knowledge of the University of Hawaii policies pertaining to use and management of IT resources, institutional data governance, data classification, and HIPAA.
