Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia & Greene Counties operates the Taste NY Store located at the New Baltimore Travel Plaza in Hannacroix, NY.

Taste NY Market Store Clerks work under the direction and supervision of the Taste NY Market Manager and Taste NY Assistant Market Manager. Primary responsibilities include assisting with management of inventory, operation of cash register, cash controls, transportation of inventory to the store, customer service, food service and record keeping.

Under the guidance of the supervisor, helps to keep the store visually distinctive and impeccably maintained – cleaning, preparing product demonstrations, restocking, refilling supplies, etc.

Clerks also discuss Columbia & Greene County agriculture and local foods with customers to engage them in these areas and to provide information upon request about the food and farm products sold in the store.

These are grant-funded positions.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education.
  • Ability to effectively work in an informal, educational-based retail environment, performing positive public educational and customer service experiences.
  • Communication Skills – Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods. Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to constantly work flexible hours related to the Market schedule, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to constantly work in a retail setting – ability to maneuver around the sales floor, stockroom, and office, ability to operate point of sale register, office computer and other equipment.
  • Ability to frequently lift, move and/or transport Market products, supplies and equipment with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Math Skills – Ability to complete basic math functions in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to meet regular travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver’s license and ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required. Must be able to drive personal or Association vehicle for pick-up and delivery of products. Hand-carts or dollies may be used for transportation purposes.
  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse public audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.
  • Familiarity with windows-based software including use of internet-based communications and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to follow procedures and written instructions.
  • Ability and willingness to work with a high degree of integrity, accuracy, organization, sound professional judgment, and the ability to handle confidential, sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year retail sales experience.
  • Experience working in customer service and retail environments.
  • Understanding of basic marketing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency with internet based communications.
  • Knowledge of the organization, operation, philosophy and objectives of Cooperative Extension.
  • Knowledge of agriculture and agricultural practices.

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Coordination/Operation – 95%

  • Provides customer service – greets, assists and serves the needs of Taste NY store customers. Describe the local farms, produce, food and products displayed.
  • Operates point of sale cash register, makes change, etc. Cash Controls – follow all procedures for proper management and handling of cash.
  • Stock and replenish store supplies and inventory. Track product inventory.
  • Prepares product and food demonstrations.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining a visually distinctive and impeccably maintained store.
  • Assist with store opening and closing procedures.
  • Quickly notifies supervisors of any unique or emergency situations.
  • Assist with store inspection, organization and recordkeeping.
  • Receive and log scheduled deliveries.
  • Assist with promotion of agri-tourism in Columbia & Greene Counties.
  • Maintain equipment, troubleshoot if necessary and call for repair as directed.
  • Regularly transport self, and/or Market materials and resources related to the Taste NY Market and/or program.
  • Frequently lift, move and/or transport Market products, supplies, and equipment
  • Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

Compensation paid at the rate of $15 per hour. Hours may vary (part time and full-time).
