Job Description

The Farm Research Associate will perform independent and supervisory roles in soil science research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in soil science and plants. Learning requirements are predominantly intellectual and varied in character and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Candidate must contribute to the preparation of proposals for funding agencies, prepare manuscripts for publication, operation of research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research.

This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. 

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, conduct, and oversee experiments in field, greenhouse, and laboratory settings, including the evaluation and application of soil science and plant research techniques. Keep detailed records of experimental data and results for research projects.
  • Oversee the planting, growing, and harvesting of plants, monitor plant health, soil conditions, and water levels, and implement pest and disease control measures in collaboration with experts. Maintain inventory and manage supplies, including seeds, soil, fertilizers, and equipment.
  • Utilize computers, laboratory equipment, and statistical tools to analyze research data. Summarize research findings for scientific publications and clientele-focused reports. Assist in developing marketing strategies for plants and produce.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students, as well as field and laboratory staff involved in research. Install, operate, and maintain research equipment, ensuring proper functionality and repair when necessary.
  • Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, and committees and performs other duties as deemed necessary.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Two years of related professional experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and technical equipment.
  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, willing to learn statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer-related tasks.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Soil Science or relevant field.
