ABOUT RECOURSE

Recourse targets development finance as a means of influencing the wider investment community, financial flows and governments, to ensure inclusive, environmentally sustainable, socially just and pro-poor development. POSITION OVERVIEW

The Africa Finance Campaigner will play a central role in leading efforts to halt fossil gas financing in Africa, with a particular focus on exposing and advocating against funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank Group. This role requires a dedicated campaigner experienced in policy advocacy, coalition-building, and producing impactful research and communication materials. Working full-time alongside the Recourse team, global allies and in solidarity with southern and northern partners to expose and combat gas finance, the campaigner will develop strategies and mobilise stakeholders to influence a shift from fossil gas toward renewable energy investments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Advocacy and Policy Influence
   • Research, analyse, and monitor financial flows and policy related to fossil gas projects in Africa, documenting findings to build strong advocacy evidence
   • Analyse how the AfDB and World Bank Group shape macroeconomic policy that can rapidly facilitate the transition away from gas toward sustainable energy solutions
   • Engage with AfDB and World Bank Group staff, management, and African member governments to advocate for policy changes that prioritise renewable energy investment over fossil gas expansion.
   • Build strategic alliances with local and international stakeholders to strengthen campaign efforts against fossil gas finance.
   • Lead policy discussions and initiatives that highlight the environmental and social impacts of fossil gas projects on African communities.
2. Campaigning Against Fossil Gas Finance
   • Drive campaigns aimed at ending fossil gas policy and finance from the African Development Bank and World Bank Group..
   • Develop high-quality advocacy materials, such as policy briefs, reports, and public communications, to raise awareness and influence decision-makers at the Banks..
3. Stakeholder Engagement and Coalition Building
   • Work closely with civil society partners across Africa and in the Global North, fostering mutually supportive relationships and coordinating joint activities.
   • Amplify the demands of civil society groups representing communities affected by fossil gas projects and policy by facilitating their involvement in advocacy activities.
   • Organise and participate in events, panels, and workshops to ensure the concerns and perspectives of African partners are heard in international forums.
4. Project Coordination and Reporting
   • Ensure alignment of all campaign activities with grant requirements and organisational goals.
   • Maintain regular reporting on project progress, challenges, and achievements for transparency with stakeholders.
   • Identify and collaborate on funding opportunities to secure additional resources that support campaign expansion.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:

• Minimum 3 years of experience in advocacy or campaigning, ideally within environmental or human rights organisations, with specific expertise in fossil fuels or financial flows.
• A relevant degree in Law, Economics, Public Policy, International Relations, or related fields.
• Strong research and writing skills, with a proven ability to produce impactful, evidence-based policy materials.
• Familiarity with international financial institutions, particularly the African Development Bank and World Bank Group and their environmental and social policies.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse, remote team.
• Commitment to social and environmental justice, with sensitivity to gender and SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) issues.
• Experience working with grassroots organisations, particularly in African contexts, supporting their linkage of local issues to global policy change.
• Willingness to help with logistical and administrative tasks as needed.
• Ability to travel up to 4 weeks per year.
