Division Overview
The HITS Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) division secures, manages, and architects Michigan Medicine data centers, networks, and communication infrastructures. The team is responsible for all Michigan Medicine IT-related technical infrastructure, including data centers and communication facilities; wired, wireless, and in-house cellular networks; spectrum management; communication; audio visual services, complex device management; fiber/wiring plant; hosting; directories, databases, and storage; and continuity of operations institution-wide. The team collaborates with partners across Michigan Medicine to ensure the institution’s technology infrastructure’s security, stability, reliability, scalability, and economic management.
The HITS Network Support Team at Michigan Medicine is seeking a candidate to fill the role of Network Architect Intermediate. This role includes work in network engineering, architecture, infrastructure support, cloud networking, and automation. Complex technical problem-solving skills and adaptability are crucial for success.
Job Summary
Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays a role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with technology-related information, products, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.
The Network and Communication Support Services team within the Enterprise Infrastructure division is looking for an experienced and motivated individual to join our team to help design, implement, and maintain our wired and wireless network in an enterprise 24/7 environment.
You will have a significant Cisco switch, router background, and wireless experience supporting Cisco wireless technology. You will have strong Ethernet, TCP/IP, and routing knowledge and a solid understanding of DHCP and DNS. You may also have equivalent experience with Juniper Networks or Aruba Wireless.
Responsibilities*
- Network Engineering: Leading network upgrade and depreciated replacement lifecycle and network design for facilities projects. Including physical installation of network or other equipment, the configuration of switches and routers, and troubleshooting fiber and copper connectivity. Perform network access and distribution design, equipment specification, procurement, project management, creating documentation, and scheduling activities.
- Network Infrastructure Support: Responding to and resolving issues with the network environment, actively participating in the Major Incident processes, monitoring and managing the network infrastructure, performing performance analysis and reporting, and optimizing network configurations. Provide 24/7 on-call support in a rotating weekly schedule. Perform network equipment firmware and software upgrades during non-business hours. Process incident and service request tickets on a rotating schedule.
- Complex technical problem solving: Collaborate in resolving complex technical issues across the enterprise. Work with different subject matter experts across Michigan Medicine and UM to identify and fix network problems. Including documenting technical solutions, process procedures, and standards.
- Network Architecture: Collaborate with network architecture colleagues to evaluate new technologies and help develop architectures and best practices for wired and wireless networks. Develop, enhance, and maintain cloud network solutions following best practices.
- Cloud Networking and Automation: Collaborate with network architect colleagues to troubleshoot network connectivity problems and determine whether they originate on-premises or in the cloud. Help modernize processes by leveraging automation and scripting to streamline network provisioning and maintenance tasks. This includes using cloud-based network management systems such as Cisco DNAC, Meraki, SD-WAN, Thousand Eyes, etc.
- Adaptability: Be flexible and adaptable to evolving technologies and industry trends, such as cloud platforms and environments. Be committed to continuous learning, as our network team will be at the forefront of technological advancements in cloud networking.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years of experience implementing and managing complex Cisco network infrastructure.
Desired Qualifications*
- Cisco CCT, CCNA or CCNP, or other network certifications.
- Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Network Engineer are a plus.
- Experience working with Cisco 4400, 8000, and 9500 series routers.
- Experience working with Cisco Catalyst 9300 and 9400 switches with dual supervisors or stack configurations.
- Experience working in a healthcare or other 24/7 enterprise network environment.
- Experience with VLAN, VRF, subnetting, switch and router configuration, and Cisco IOS code deployment in an enterprise network.
- Experience with Cisco DNAC, Meraki, or SD-WAN.
- Experience with Cisco Meraki, MX 68, and above routers and switches.
- Experience supporting DHCP and DNS operations and technology in a large, complex environment with Infoblox or a similar management tool.
- Experience with UPS equipment used to power network and telecommunications equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting copper and fiber cabling infrastructure.
- Experience supporting Cisco?s Identity Services Engine (ISE) and Cisco license management.
- Experience with programming or scripting necessary for automation and network management.
- Experience designing and implementing scalable cloud network solutions on AWS, Azure, or Google.
- Knowledge of SNMP, Intermapper, Cisco Thousand Eyes, or other enterprise network monitoring tools used to monitor both on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
- Knowledge and experience designing, supporting, and troubleshooting a wireless network infrastructure. Including experience with Cisco wireless controllers.
- Experience deploying and troubleshooting Cisco 9000 series wireless access points using Cisco DNA center.
- Knowledge of 802.11 wireless security standards such as 802.1x, certificate authentication, WPA, WPA2, and WPA-PSK.
- Knowledge of 802.11a/b/g/n/AC/AX and the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz wireless spectrum.
- Familiarity with Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) using ServiceNow or a similar system.
- Familiarity with single-phase electrical power distribution for network and telecommunications equipment.
- Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as VMWare, Hyper-V, or KVM.
- Familiarity with Splunk, Syslog, SQL, or other log aggregation tools.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to work with staff at all levels.
- An ability to lift (or push/pull) up to 50 lbs.
Work Locations
This position is being offered as a Hybrid position. There will be times when it will be appropriate for you to work from home. There will be other times that you will be required to work onsite for meetings, network deployment, and operations. This position will be approximately 40% remote work.
Working during non-business hours and on weekends is required for this position.
On-call rotation is required for this position.
The work requires travel to various locations on and off the university campus in Ann Arbor and throughout southeast Michigan.
