The Assistant Manager will provide management and operations support for Muck Crops Ag Research Station (Willard, Ohio). The position will assist with coordinating field operations for faculty, OSU Extension staff and students who implement field research in vegetable crops of importance to area growers and farmers.

The position will be first point of contact for local farmers/producers/clientele who interact with the research station, including outreach and extension activities. The position will report to the Research Specialist/Manager for both N. Central and Muck Crops Ag Research Stations.

55% Reporting to the Research Specialist for CFAES Agricultural Research Stations, assists with coordination of field operations supporting research programs conducted at the CFAES Muck Crops Agricultural Research Station. Receives investigator project requests and prioritizes/assigns field space for experiments. Coordinates with research/extension faculty, staff, and students to establish and maintain field research projects on vegetable crops on muck soils. Plans daily work assignments and follows protocols to successfully accomplish research objectives. Participates in operations including plot layout, tillage, fertilizer and chemical pest control application; planting, mechanical weed control, harvesting and recording of yield data. Keeps detailed records of field operations. Monitors/scouts crops for pests or conditions that may impact research, reports observations and takes appropriate action.

25% Assists with supervision, hiring/training of student or temporary staff under supervisor’s direction. Performs business functions, enters purchase requests and assists with procurement of supplies and equipment. Operates tractors, tillage equipment, sprayers, cultivators and other farm machinery. Assists with coordinating agricultural equipment, facilities, and grounds maintenance, including field drainage and irrigation. Assists with monitoring budget resources and time/effort records. Assists management team to ensure the unit’s safe work environment, including equipment operation and pesticide use; communicates pesticide re-entry information to faculty and staff. Assists with supporting specialty crops research at other CFAES research stations, field labs or sites as directed by supervisor.

20% Serves as first point of contact for local farmers, agricultural clientele and stakeholders. Assists with addressing local producer questions and outreach events. Participates in local producer meetings, and attends continuing education programs. Assists with training graduate and undergraduate students on specialty crops research procedures. Works flexible schedule as required by weather, soil, pest and crop conditions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Position is based at Willard, Ohio.

Additional Information:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED. Certification or vocational training may be required. Associate degree in relevant field may be preferred. 4 years of relevant experience required. 6 or more years of relevant experience preferred.

The salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
