Description of Work Unit WCRC is part of a network of 7 research centers (9 sites) throughout the state. WCRC includes the OMRS located 7 miles southeast of Grand Junction. Site elevation is approximately 4750 feet with an average growing season of 182 frost-free days. The research conducted at this site includes tree fruits, wine grape production, and ornamental horticulture. OM is also the primary site utilized by the Community Alliance for Education and Hunger Relief, an initiative that engages the broader western Colorado community in food insecurity and agriculture literacy.
The Grand Valley Research Station (GVRS) is located 15 miles northwest of Grand Junction. With an average growing season of 175 days at an elevation of 4500 ft, the reasonably deep loam soils at this location have been the home of the bulk of agronomic research conducted at the WCRC. GVRS focuses on the efficient use of water in a variety of agronomic crops.
The Organic Agriculture Research Station (OARS) is located at 30624 Hwy 92, Hotchkiss, CO at an elevation of 5800 ft and focuses on certified organic production of tree fruit and other horticultural crops.
Position Summary Collaborates with program team at WCRC-OM and off-campus partners to meet goals of agriculture literacy programs and career development pathways as apart of the Morgridge Family Foundation HUB initiative. Responsible for establishing, maintaining, and managing agricultural areas of WCRC-OM for hands-on learning by K-12 students, post-secondary students, and the general public. Employee will support all aspects of field vegetable production, including greenhouse management, field preparation, equipment operation, weed control, crop management, fertilization and soil health initiatives, irrigation, cover crop management, and harvest and distribution of horticultural crops. Employee will support activities of other faculty and staff at WCRC as the activities relate to creating and managing other outdoor learning spaces. This includes pruning and crop management in orchards and maintenance of garden and hoophouse areas. Employee will help support educational programming with K-12 students, community volunteers, and individuals pursuing agricultural career pathways through internships, capstones, or job training experiences. Based on funding and project scope, the employment for this position is expected to run March-November. The work schedule could be negotiated with significant changes in funding or project workload.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Associates degree plus 2 years of professional experience OR a Bachelor’s degree. Degree(s) and/or professional experience with an emphasis in agriculture, horticulture, or outdoor recreation.
  • On-farm experience with horticultural management
  • Experience working with diverse populations in an outdoor educational setting
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Ability to meet environmental demands (such as working in inclement weather) and physical demands (such as lifting 20 to 40 lbs. materials daily and field work/equipment usage)
  • Must has a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience working in variety of agricultural operations including vegetable plots, orchards, and/or greenhouses.
  • Ability to operate tractors and other implements and equipment associated with vegetable crops, cover crops, and orchards.
  • Experience training and supervising untrained personnel or volunteers in tasks and use of equipment
