Position Summary:

The Agriculture & Natural Resources Associate I will work under the direction of the 4-H & Youth Development Center at Lone Oaks Farm to assist in development and facilitation of activities in the STEM program at Lone Oaks Farm, a facility owned by the University of Tennessee as well as the development and upkeep of the STEM garden. The STEM program represents a partnership between the University of Tennessee, the Hardeman County School System, and the Tennessee Soybean Board. This program exists to serve K-12 students in Hardeman County as well as other area school districts. The Agriculture & Natural Resources Associate I will also assist in program planning and implementation as it relates to the STEM garden and programming aligned with the garden facility during the school year as well as 4-H camp. The Agriculture & Natural Resources Associate I will aid with education programs that meet the needs of all eligible clientele regardless of age, race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability or veteran status. This position is fully funded by grant accounts.

Qualifications

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The Agriculture & Natural Resources Associate I position is housed at Lone Oaks Farm, a facility operated by UT Extension. The position is responsible to the 4-H & Youth Development Center Director. This is a full time, non-exempt position.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring that the STEM garden is well-maintained, safe, and secure for STEM programming and student programming. Planning, preparation and maintenance of the garden, greenhouse, and other outdoor spaces as it relates to horticulture and plant science STEM programming. Work cooperatively with the 4-H & Youth Development Center Director and all Lone Oaks Farm staff in planning, planting, and maintaining the garden year-round. This includes but is not limited to raised beds, greenhouse, summer/fall vegetable garden, and row crop demonstration plots. Safely operate garden machinery/tools as it relates to the planting and maintenance of the STEM garden. Assist with the leadership for planning, implementing and evaluating the STEM (Science, Technology, engineering and math) Program at Lone Oaks Farm.
  • Assist the 4-H & Youth Development Center Director and the STEM Program Coordinator in adapting activities and materials for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing the use of the environment and the outdoors as an integrating context in STEM education, as well as providing an opportunity for all students to participate in activities. Assist in the development and implementation of programs and activities as it relates to 4-H camp. Develop a strong working relationship with school systems.
  • Assisting with the supervision and instruction of students as it relates to the STEM program and 4-H camp. 

Minimum/Required Qualifications (include education experience, skills & abilities, licenses & certificates):

  • Basic knowledge of gardening/row crop 
  • Basic knowledge on the proper use of garden machinery
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience working in a garden/row crop setting
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with technology including computer skills
  • Experience working with students of all grade levels and abilities
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or camp setting
