Brief Description

The role is within the central asset management team reporting to the Senior Asset Engineer responsible for GSM-R. Duties will leverage, and build, on your telecoms knowledge with responsibilities to inspect Network Rail telecommunications equipment throughout the UK. Updating and manipulating data records with the inspected equipment status is part of the duties as is generating reports to aid inspection and renewal planning. You will be part of a team that work collegially across the additional disciplines of Fixed Voice and IP/SDH/PDH transmission and you will be encouraged to widen your knowledge base with coaching and training.

About the role (External)

Determine renewal requirements for the Central Telecom business plan. Provide a comprehensive Telecom engineering support service to the regional businesses.

  • Inspect and prioritise renewal proposals for inclusion into the Central Telecom renewal, refurbishment and enhancement work bank to deliver the requirements of the national telecom infrastructure platform.
  • Support the specification and acceptance of the renewal requirements criteria for Telecom engineering works including design approval and any specific requirements for acceptance of the equipment into maintenance.
  • Following handover, support the development and implementation of projects to confirm the renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes agreed. Check that completed schemes are appropriately assessed to determine they meet the project remit.
  • Support Telecom systems engineering input to the determination of appropriate engineering maintenance regimes and activity volumes for Telecom assets in accordance with company policies, standards and specifications.
  • Drive the accuracy and comprehensive nature of records relating to the existence, configuration and modification history of Telecom engineering assets are maintained and that they accurately reflect their current operational status.
  • Undertake the delivery of the asset condition inspections that will inform the Telecom asset condition database, the renewals work bank and provide a comprehensive engineering support service.
  • Support the review and make recommendations on derogation and non-compliance applications to Telecom systems engineering related standards.
  • Support the Telecom engineering activities in support assurance processes including the maintenance audit programmes and engineering verification.
  • Monitor the reliability and performance of Telecom systems related assets across the route and instigate, lead and participate in the implementation of corrective actions to improve as required.

How to apply (External)

Essential

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
  • Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
  • Significant Telecom engineering experience, particularly related to renewals and enhancements
  • Holds relevant professional licences and technical qualifications, or capable of achieving within reasonable timescales
  • Knowledge of policy and standards relating to Telecom engineering
  • Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain

Desirable

  • Degree in a relevant subject
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
  • Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems
