Job Description
This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Candidates must follow the instructions in the “To Apply” section.
Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks a lawyer to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Farm & Freedom Division.
The Farm & Freedom Division generally handles the Office of the Attorney General’s highest-profile and most complex civil litigation. That includes defending State laws and rules, suing the federal government to keep it within its constitutional and statutory limits, and protecting the public by representing the State and its officers in major civil litigation. The Division’s recent cases include defending Iowa’s heartbeat law, suing the EPA for refusing to comply with the Clean Air Act, and defending Iowa’s liquor laws from out-of-state challenges.
Lawyers in this elite unit must be creative, motivated, and able to handle complex litigation as part of a leanly staffed trial team. Farm & Freedom Division Cases often have an impact far beyond the dispute immediately at issue, and Division lawyers must be able to strategize from the outset of a case how its ultimate resolution before the Iowa or U.S. Supreme Court can shape the law for decades to come. The Division works closely with the Solicitor General Division and assists it once a case has been appealed, including to the Eighth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition to a collegial environment among many of the best lawyers in the state, perks of working for the Office of the Attorney General include flexible work-from-home schedules; excellent work-life balance and benefits; and no hourly billing.
