The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an open joint-faculty position in the Departments of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine. 

Position Overview

The successful candidate will have a 70% appointment as a clinical track faculty in the Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery service within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and a 30% faculty appointment in Diagnostic Parasitology within the Department of Veterinary Preventative Medicine.

The successful candidate will participate in didactic and laboratory teaching in both departments. They will join a team of 3 additional farm animal faculty members, one internist and 2 surgeons, as well as one other parasitologist.

The Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service is a busy, haul-in hospital which provides 24/7 spectrum of veterinary care to farm animal species from both production and non-production environments including ruminants, camelids, swine, and exotic ungulates. The farm animal service has 2 residents, two interns, and 3 registered veterinary technicians dedicated to the service.

The diagnostic parasitology service provides services to the hospital’s veterinarians, as well as the veterinarians of Ohio, and the United States. It is supported by a technician with over 20 years of experience in parasite diagnostics.

Performance Objectives

TEACHING DUTIES

  • Didactic and laboratory teaching of professional students
  • Didactic teaching of residents
  • Clinical teaching of professional students, residents, and interns in the Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service and Diagnostic Parasitology Service, in conjunction with the diagnosis and treatment of patients presented to the OSU Veterinary Medical Center.

CLINICAL SERVICE AND OUTREACH DUTIES

  • All aspects of patient care associated with a busy farm animal practice including primary patient management, mentorship, and consultation to house officers of the farm animal service, backup of house officers after hours, client care, communication with clients and referring DVMs, consulting with colleagues, medical record keeping on cases, professional development, and outreach.
  • All aspects of diagnostic veterinary parasitology serving the Veterinary Medical Center and as a reference laboratory for samples from referring DVM. Provide consultation when questions arise regarding diagnostic testing, interpretations, and potential treatment recommendations. 

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY DUTIES

  • Use of scheduled off-clinic time for preparing teaching materials, conducting clinical and collaborative research, writing for publication, and other scholarly activities.
  • Although extramurally funded research is not required for clinical track faculty, participation in collaborative research projects, resident and graduate student projects is strongly encouraged.

Education and Experience Requirements

DVM required. Completion of a large animal internal medicine residency. Boarded or board eligible for ACVIM (Large Animal). Interest and advanced training in parasitology. Significant resident training in farm animal/food animal/livestock medicine and surgery.
