Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Structural Geology
Position Number 35152
Assistant Professor
Department of Earth Sciences, University of Manitoba
Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources
The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Manitoba invites applications from qualified candidates for a probationary (tenure-track appointment) in Structural Geology at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2025; start date may be negotiable.
Qualified applicants must have a PhD in Earth Sciences, a proven record of excellence in research and the potential for excellence in teaching. The department seeks candidates capable of conducting cutting-edge research in the application of structural geology or tectonics to mineral systems. The search for mineral deposits relies on understanding the dynamic processes governing the evolution of metal sources, carriers and transport pathways, as well as the chronology, structural parameters and tectonics of mineralization environments. These processes collectively create the optimal conditions for mineral and energy resource formation. The successful candidate will be ready to establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program, and should demonstrate an ability to attract industry and public sector funding to support both undergraduate and graduate student research.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Structural Geology, Mineral Deposits, and contribute to Field Mapping courses. The ability and willingness to teach courses outside the candidate’s main area of expertise, especially introductory courses, will be considered an asset. The candidate is expected to actively engage with, and inspire, students to pursue careers in the Geosciences, particularly those students from Indigenous and other systemically marginalized groups. Candidates that can complement and contribute to ongoing research and teaching activities in the department are of particular interest.
The Department of Earth Sciences, in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources, provides an exciting environment for teaching and research. The department is home to 14 faculty members: 3 Assistant Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 4 Professors, 1 Distinguished Professor, and 4 Teaching Instructors. The department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Geoscience. It has a well-established national and international research reputation with strengths in Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Paleontology, Geophysics, and Environmental Geosciences. The department has over $10 million of equipment housed in major, multi-user laboratories with six technicians that support this research infrastructure.
