McGill is embarking on an ambitious collaboration with seven African organizations to support educational and entrepreneurial opportunities for sub-Saharan youth. This Collaborative will foster interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, industry and policy makers to catalyze research, development and innovation and address structural disconnects between educational institutions and the workforce that contribute to unemployment.

Together, the Secretariat team (6-8 people in total) will serve as a facilitating hub for activity across all partner institutions (PI). The Secretariat will likewise promote and reflect the shared Principles of Collaboration adopted by the Partner organizations (inclusive governance; diverse views make us stronger; partnerships, not projects; respect; equality and inclusion; commitment to those served by the Collaborative) in support of Collaborative programming and deliverables and in the complex international operations of the Secretariat in support of the Collaborative. Work with team in Ghana.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of the Secretariat to the Nutrition and Sustainable Agri-food Collaborative, the Associate Director, Finance and Reporting will be responsible for the financial oversight and reporting activities of the Secretariat ensuring transparency, accountability, and compliance with McGill financial regulations and policies. Maintain a consistent rapport with his/her counterpart at the Partner Institutions, the incumbent will work collaboratively with the Associate Director of Administration and Operations, together ensuring supervisory oversight of the rest of the Secretariat team. Optimize resource allocation, identify and fix red flags in stakeholders financial reports, and implement best practices in financial management across the breath of the Collaborative. Play a vital role in fostering a culture of financial responsibility and sustainability for all members of the Collaborative. Directly manage staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Associate Director, Administration and Operations to prepare and analyze financial reports, including monthly and quarterly reports with Partner Institutions and annual reports to the funding organization
  • Manage the Collaborative annual budget, including resource allocation, alignment with Strategic Objectives, funds transfer to Partner Institutions, and monitoring
  • Develop and maintain KPIs to track financial performance across the Collaborative
  • Ensure compliance with relevant McGill policies and regulations, with signed service agreements between McGill and the partner institutions, and with the regulations and expectations of the funding organization.
  • Oversee a variety of accounting and budget transactions including journal entries, advances, expense reports, supplier invoicing, accounts payable, accounts receivable and other functions
  • Initiate cyclical control measures, including error reports, inactivity, variances and over-expenditures
  • Manage quarterly disbursements of funds to partner institutions in support of confirmed objectives and deliverables
  • Direct supervision of the Secretariat Finance Officer and liaison with the Partner Institutions accounting and finance managers
  • Represent and Support the Director as required in meetings, building, and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Education and experience: 

  • Undergraduate university degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field. 
  • Five (5) year of revenant experience

Other qualifications: 

  • Financial management and deep-dive analytical skills. 
  • Experience in developing and administering a budget.
  • Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into a cohesive financial plan and ability to develop and implement new processes and/or systems.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience using Banner FIS (including the budget module)
  • Demonstrated experience working with information of a sensitive and confidential nature. 
  • Result-oriented with excellent interpersonal to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders at all levels. 
  • Client focused and proven attention to detail. 
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong supervisory, coaching, and leadership skills. 
  • Experience working within an academic environment is a strong asset.
