The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab’s research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab’s success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven’s Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab’s fiscal matters and its approximately $700 million annual budget.

The Business Operations Office for Nuclear & Particle Physics Directorate (NPP) has an opening for a Business Specialist / Advanced Business Specialist position within the Collider-Accelerator Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide financial support, monitoring, and oversight for assigned projects.

  • Prepare and monitor budgets, expenses, and commitments for assigned programs within the Collider-Accelerator Department.

  • Prepare current year cost plans including detailed labor plans for projects and other ad-hoc financial reports as assigned.

  • Generate monthly reports for distribution or website publication.

  • Prepare cost estimates in support of both internally and externally funded proposals.

  • Assist with the Laboratory’s annual budget submission process and DOE reviews.

  • Provide financial support for other funded programs within the Directorate as needed.

  • Adherence to all BNL business rules, allowable cost monitoring, and compliance.

  • Participate in the development of procedural improvements and problem resolution as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance/business or equivalent experience based on 2:1 (experience: college) years.

  • Four (4) years of related work experience.

  • Proficient skill level in Microsoft Office products with intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel, as well as experience managing and manipulating large databases.

  • Ability to review financial data and possess strong analytical skills to prepare meaningful financial reports.

  • Ability to work independently, establish own goals (with supervisory approval), and apply independent judgement, within policies and standards, to complete projects and administer processes.

  • Ability to establish positive working relationships at all levels.

  • Flexible team player who can interact with scientific and business staff to accomplish objectives and resolve issues.

  • Ability to prioritize and effectively deal with deadlines.

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems within own area of responsibility.

  • Ability to identify organizational resources and seek assistance when needed.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be self-motivated, resourceful, and organized, taking ownership of all assigned work.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Seven (7) years of related work experience to be considered for Advanced Business Specialist.

    • Has ability to pro-actively develop solutions to a variety of complex problems.

    • Uses innovative approaches to resolve issues within established policy.

    • Ability to work at a high level of independence and serve as primary contact in areas of responsibility both internally and externally.

  • Experience using PeopleSoft Financials and the ability to create queries and generate reports.

  • Experience with proposal process, including Call and budget requirements.

  • Proficiency in Power Business Intelligence (Power BI).

  • Familiarity with Workday Human Resources software.

  • Familiarity with PowerPoint.

  • Knowledge of BNL policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Interest in science mission of the Laboratory.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • The ability to work at a computer/keyboard for extended periods is essential.

  • Ability to concentrate on accuracy.

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $78,400 – $117,600 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
