About the College/Unit/Department 

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

Farm Practice is one of four services within the Field Services Section of University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Field Services Section. The other three services are Theriogenology, Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Production Medicine. Together, the section currently includes 9 faculty (2 Farm Practice), 4-6 house officers (2 Farm Practice) and 3 veterinary assistants (1 Farm Practice).

The Field Services Section shares a mission to advance animal health and well-being through high quality large animal veterinary practice in the field with the ability to offer selected specialty services, clinical education for veterinary students, interns, and residents, and clinically applicable scientific study. Farm Practice serves a diverse large animal caseload in the greater Athens, GA area meeting the needs of local large animals and their owners while providing high quality clinical education. The Farm Practice clinical rotation for fourth year students is a cornerstone opportunity for gaining experience and knowledge in large animal primary, first-opinion care in the field. Thanks to the diverse qualifications of the faculty and collaborative efforts of the services within the section, patients, clients, and students of each service within the Field Services section benefit from a wide spectrum of veterinary services that can be provided.

Position SummaryThe Department of Large Animal Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, invites applications for a clinical-track faculty position in Farm Practice at the rank of clinical assistant/associate professor.

As a clinical track position, the majority of the faculty member’s time will be allocated to clinical and didactic teaching and service. The ideal candidate would be willing to enthusiastically embrace first opinion individual farm animal or small herd cases (small ruminant, bovine, camelid, and pet pigs) to compliment the training and interest of current faculty. Proven success and comfort with equine routine/preventative care and emergencies will strengthen the applicant’s consideration. The successful candidate should have an interest in promoting a caseload and innovative services that will serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Service to clients is an integral part of hospital duties. All faculty are expected to participate in scholarly activity related to clinical service and teaching, but establishing an independent research program is not expected. Collaborative research is encouraged as is development of continuing education programs to veterinarians and the public.

Additional RequirementsTo be considered for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine; have 2 years post-DVM experience in large animal practice. To be considered for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine; have a minimum of 7 years post-DVM experience (at the time of appointment); and be board certified in a relevant discipline or have an exception as noted above.

The successful candidate is expected to obtain and maintain a valid Georgia veterinary license as well as eligibility for a State of Georgia driver’s license. 

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification 

Candidates with and without board certification in a relevant discipline are encouraged to apply. Candidates without board certifications should have 2-5 years of experience in primary care large animal practice and/or accomplishments that compensate for, or make irrelevant, the lack of board certification. Candidates are encouraged to contact us if they have questions about meeting this requirement. Additionally, it is advantageous if the applicant has 2-5 years of experience in clinical, laboratory, and didactic teaching of veterinary students.
