UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are currently recruiting for a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist – Upper Limb Rehabilitation.The Clinical Specialist position offers a unique opportunity to provide clinical leadership and expertise within an interdisciplinary team of specialists. It is focussed on upper limb injuries with a specialised focus on the shoulder. Your team will include consultant physiotherapists, rehabilitation physiotherapists, biomechanists, and strength & conditioning coaches.Your expertise will contribute to our mission of delivering unparalleled patient care and innovative treatment methods.Key Responsibilities:Clinical Leadership
- Lead the upper limb rehabilitation service, providing expert consultation and joint working with staff to manage patient care through the rehabilitation pathway.
- Lead upper limb stream caseload, assess and delegate referrals appropriately.
- Ensure high standards of patient care by implementing evidence-based practices aligned with national and specialist clinical guidance.
- Keep staff informed of recent developments through participation in research-based conferences, network meetings, and postgraduate education and training.
- Lead team meetings to inform, engage, and motivate team members and to keep staff updated on hospital policies and strategies.
- Lead through innovative practice and continuous development of clinical knowledge and skills.
Rehabilitation
- Develop and enhance local pathways of care specifically tailored for upper limb rehabilitation patients.
- Conduct advanced assessments using investigative and clinical reasoning skills to develop individualised treatment plans.
- Evaluate and implement clinical outcome measures to monitor effectiveness of rehabilitation pathways.
Management
- Manage and organise your patient caseload and support other therapists with complex upper limb rehabilitation cases.
- Develop and monitor clinical standards for upper limb rehabilitation in accordance with local and national guidelines.
- Continuously evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the service through service evaluations and clinical audits in collaboration with the Head of Rehabilitation and relevant stakeholders.
- Responsible for roster, time management, and scheduling of upper limb rehabilitation team members.
Staff Development
- Support and facilitate continuous professional development for team members.
- Maintain high clinical standards and support staff through comprehensive in-service training, one-to-one coaching, clinical supervision, and practical sessions.
- Promote personal and professional development through regular staff appraisals, and performance reviews.
- Participate actively in postgraduate education and organise specialist courses, liaising with local Universities.
Research & Development
- Undertake and support research projects to enhance the evidence base and enhance patient care and service development for the management of upper limb rehabilitation.
Stakeholder Relationships
- Market the service to key stakeholders, including patients, consultants, and commissioning groups.
- Refer patients to appropriate orthopaedic/neuro consultants, sports and exercise medicine consultants, and other tertiary services.
- Serve as an information resource and establish collaborative links with local and national advanced practitioners.
Communication
- Use advanced communication skills to effectively interact with patients and referrers, ensuring understanding and maximising rehabilitation potential.
- Ensure confidentiality in all communications, especially regarding patient, carer, and staff information.
- Facilitate clear communication within the multi-professional team to coordinate patient care effectively.
- Ensure appropriate record keeping and maintenance of good practice in data recording.
Teamwork
- Suggest and promote creative ideas and approaches to improve individual and team performance.
- Offer extended scopes of practice to optimise patient management within a clinic setting (in line with services developed by the Director of Sports Medicine).
Professional Development
- Maintain a clean, safe environment in adherence to UPMC SSC’s standards.
- Safeguard the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
- Manage and maintain hospital records effectively to meet legal and regulatory requirements.
- Support the investigation of clinical complaints and incidents, ensuring continuous improvement in service delivery.
- Adhere to health and safety policies, report any accidents or incidents, and use protective equipment as required.
- Participate in governance activities to ensure high standards of care.
QUALIFICATIONS:Essential:
- Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree or equivalent.
- MSc Physiotherapy, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science.
Desirable:
- PhD in the field of Sports Medicine.
RESISTRATIONS
- Candidate must be a member of CORU.
- ISCP membership preferable.
EXPERIENCE and SKILLS
- 7 years post-graduate experience.
- Further qualifications or knowledge in clinical specialist area of upper limb and shoulder injuries.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to collaborate with medical staff, performance staff and biomechanists throughout the rehabilitation process to enhance patient care
- Demonstrate clinical reasoning skills to assess issues, develop sound conclusions and recommend an appropriate course of action
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Good injury prevention and treatment knowledge with a strong understanding of strength and conditioning principles.
- Ability to critique and summarise research in relation to upper limb injuries and rehabilitation.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE
- Experience working with and delivering services to sporting organisations.
- Proficient in the use of testing equipment for upper limb rehabilitation.
