Job description
Required to fill this new post within the Gastroenterology Department at St James’s University Hospital. Gastroenterology and Endoscopy services are part of the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery Clinical Service Unit.All acute surgical, gastroenterology and acute medical wards are co-located in 3 adjacent wings. Gastroenterology in-patient services are provided by two wards in the modern Bexley wing. In this wing are also Upper GI and HPB surgery wards and the transplant hepatology wards. The medical admissions ward and Emergency Dept are in the adjacent Chancellors Wing. Colorectal and the acute surgery wards are located nearby in Lincoln wing. These adjacencies are designed to provide an efficient streamlined service for in-patient services.The gastroenterology wards accept patients with the full range of gastroenterology problems including gastrointestinal haemorrhage, inflammatory bowel disease, complex nutritional issues and acute liver problems.Main duties of the jobWithin the department there are strong clinical interests in luminal gastroenterology (IBD, nutrition, small bowel disease and therapeutic endoscopy) and a strong academic interest focusing on colonic diseases and database research. The new appointee will support existing gastroenterology services. Within general gastroenterology, there is a strong emphasis on the delivery of outpatient access targets and reduced length of inpatient stay.The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.Applicants should have established skills in gastroenterology and its related specialties including IBD. Job responsibilitiesIn relation to this post, the Department of Gastroenterology is looking to appoint a Gastroenterologist with an interest in nutrition and intestinal failure to support our provision as one of the largest IF centres in the UK.2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POSTThe aim of the post is contribute to growing work load in general gastroenterology and specifically in managing complex IBD and small bowel. The post holder will take part in the general gastroenterology inpatient care which is organised on a two weeks on 12 weeks off rotational basis. In addition to this, there is a further two week block providing midweek on call including the management of acute admissions and gastrointestinal bleeding, within each 14 week period. In the outpatient setting we expect the post holder to help deliver timely high quality care by providing 3 general and specialist gastroenterology clinics. In addition the post holder will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, departmental audit and governance and will have opportunities to develop research interests as desired.Person Specification

Essential
- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Gastroenterology. Eligible for inclusion on the GMC specialist register for Gastroenterology / CCT in gastroenterology.
- JAG accreditation in endoscopy or equivalent.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable
- Additional experience of IBD in advanced fellowship setting.
- Expertise in chromoendoscopy.
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
- Evidence of previous research / publication record.
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS MBChb or equivalent qualification.
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
- YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
Desirable
- Relevant higher degree. MD/PhD

- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in gastroenterology in and outpatients.
- Specifically, must demonstrate expertise in complex IBD.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
