MU Foremost Dairy Farm – Central Missouri Research, Extension, and Education Center (CM-REEC).

Job Description

The University of Missouri is seeking a qualified individual to supervise and coordinate the operations of the MU Foremost Dairy Farm by directing the daily work of the animal caretakers, milkers and others in all operations of the farm.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Supervising all farm employees including evaluating current training levels of all employees, developing training plans, and work with each employee as needed to meet University requirements.
• Assess student employee training and formulate consistent training programs to ensure students meet University requirements.
• Budget responsibilities and decisions are shared with CM-REEC Director, Assistant Director of Livestock and Farm Manager in order to keep the farm budget solvent.
• Responsible for purchase of hay, grain, silage, and all farm supplies.
• With the CM-REEC Assistant Director of Livestock, help coordinate facility and animal needs of faculty members regarding research experiments being conducted at the Foremost Dairy Farm. Farm Manager will provide input regarding the assignment of animals to treatments and may be responsible for some aspects of experimental protocols. Farm management will help to see that all data are collected and summarized according to the protocols. There could be multiple experiments being conducted at the same time at the farm which will require organizational skills and coordinated planning on the part of the Assistant Director of Livestock and the Farm Manager.
• Meet with or host individual people and/or groups to discuss, coordinate and promote new technology, research and upcoming events that could utilize our personnel, facilities or cattle.
• Supervise the milking procedure so that the milking machines are operating properly, supervise treatment and animal health of the livestock handled by the milking personnel, maintenance of milk handling equipment, maintain Grade A sanitary standards in accordance with the Department of Agriculture requirements to ensure that the livestock are provided with feed, water, and a clean environment, sort and transport cattle to appropriate destinations.
• Keep accurate and complete records of cow health, cow identity, cow production, and providing appropriate rations to different groups of cows and keep financial records associated with the operations of the farm.
• Observe the cattle daily to notice ill or estrus animals. Treat sick animals with the proper medications and dosages according to the diagnosis. Assist the veterinarians with animals suffering from complicated or unusual illnesses. Use proper insemination procedures, thawing techniques and the correct semen when breeding the animals. Maintain a clean and healthy environment for the maternity cows and heifers.
• Regularly bill for use at farm.
• Understand income and expenses for the dairy farm.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Shift

8am – 5pm Monday thru Friday. Other shifts as needed which may include periodic weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates should have a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences or related agricultural field. It is desirable for a candidate to have the following:

• Research experience or a Master of Science degree in animal science or a related field.
• Prior experience with research, teaching and/or extension – public outreach is preferred.
• A full range of Dairy Farm management skills, including silage production, health monitoring of dairy cattle, milking experience, equipment repair knowledge, and an understanding of research protocol application.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $52,915.20 – $83,408.00 annually

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
