Job description

Offer DescriptionIn the framework of the study “Hyperspectral Imaging Platform for the European Defence” (ref: HYPER-IP), we are looking for a full-time researcher with:

  • a Master degree (or PhD) in Science or a Master degree (or PhD) in Engineering Science,
  • a background in (infrared) image processing or imaging spectroscopy
  • experience in setting up field measurements with electro-optical sensors.

The Royal Military Academy values diversity and equal opportunities. We enthusiastically welcome applications from all individuals, regardless of gender, origin, or other personal characteristics. Whether you are a man, a woman or X, or come from any background, we firmly believe that diversity enriches our community, and we encourage all qualified candidates to apply.Context
The Royal Military Academy of Belgium (RMA) is a military institution responsible for the basic academic, military and physical training of future officers, and for the continuing advanced training of officers during their active career in the Belgian Defense department ( ). It is fully recognized as a university, fulfilling the same criteria as civilian universities.
The RMA is also conducting scientific research at university level for projects funded by the Belgian Defense department or external sources.Study
For this project you will work within the Department of Mathematics (MWMW) of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
You conduct scientific research at university level on a project titled ‘Hyperspectral Imaging Platform for the European Defence’. You work within a research team and in close collaboration with the different components of the Belgian Armed Forces, as well as national and international industrial and military partners, with the aim of defining operational requirements, setting up measurement campaigns and processing of the data acquired during these measurement campaigns. A high level of autonomy is required.
The project aims to overcome some of the current technological gaps of hyperspectral technologies in the defence sector by developing a technological demonstrator for space and airborne remote sensing applications. Hyperspectral sensors in SWIR bands show a significant added value in applications like (camouflaged) target detection, surface contaminants identification and target signatures characterization with respect to VIS bands. Moreover, the SWIR band is of interest for its operational capability in a degraded visual environment.
Recently, SWIR hyperspectral imaging systems have made significant progress in terms of weight, size, cost, and performance, thanks to progress in third-generation intrinsic detectors, cryogenic cooling, and cost-effective fabrication techniques. The HYPER-IP project will progress the state of the art by developing an advanced miniaturized and militarized SWaP-C (Small Size, Weight, Power and Cost) demonstrator to achieve high performance in terms of signal to noise ratio and frame rate. The demonstrator will be integrated with a processing tool to enable real time understanding of the data. The final goal is to develop a hyperspectral system (imager and real time processor) to be used on small spaceborne platforms.Main Tasks
Perform research activities in the frame of the study project:

  • Analyze the operational needs in selected scenarios
  • Meet with national and international partners to discuss requirements and outcomes. (Regular travel is part of the job.)
  • Organize measurement campaigns/field trials to validate the results.
  • Capture and process hyperspectral data for further exploitation by other researchers.

Secondary Tasks

  • Assist with the administrative aspects of purchases
  • Assist with the dissemination of the results of this study during PR events, at international conferences and in scientific journals
  • Assist other researchers with your knowledge, including writing of new proposals in the field of Hyperspectral Imaging.
