Overview

Sam Skaggs Family Equine Education Center Facility Farm Foreman. This is a full time, fiscal year (12-month) appointment with Utah Agricultural Experiment Station (UAES). This position is classified as a Farm Foreman by USU’s Human Resources department. The job is located primarily at the Sam Skaggs Family Equine Education Center in Wellsville, Utah. The resources at this facility are a core element for successful delivery of the Equine Science and Management degree program and the Equine Human Services certificate program. The successful applicant will work closely with UAES Livestock Manager and Equine Program Director to support all Faculty users charged with curriculum, or other program delivery by managing the diverse horse herd consisting of nearly 100 University owned horses including beginning riding horses, advanced riding horses, research animals, breeding stallions, brood mares and foals. The Foreman is responsible for maintaining the physical facilities consisting of one outdoor and two indoor arenas, 4 stall barns, stallion barn and classroom building. The Foreman will ensure that all horse care, facility maintenance including: landscaping, equipment maintenance and snow removal are properly executed by actively participating in these activities with trained support staff. The Foreman is also responsible for reviewing boarding/training applications and overseeing successful operations of the boarding aspect of the facility. Occasional weekend and Holiday work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with veterinarians and teaching faculty to provide adequate nutrition, health care, hoof care, and maintain associated records.
  • Operate and maintain front end loaders, agricultural tractors, arena drags, and utility vehicles and conduct activities related to their use in a timely manner.
  • Operate landscaping equipment and complete lawn care and weed control in a timely manner.
  • Maintain all equipment and facilities at the farm and provide associated records.
  • Hire, schedule and manage an appropriate number of hourly student workers to assist in caring for the horses and keeping the barn clean.
  • Facilitate University and non-University events including scheduling of the arenas and any necessary setup ensuring that document approval process has been completed including contracts, proof of insurance or any other necessary documentation. This includes proper support prior to and throughout the event.
  • Serve as the contact person for boarders and trainers operating out of the facility, collect and process related documents and see that boarder/trainer needs are being met per terms of boarding/training contract. Grow the boarding segment through CAAS and CVM marketing.
  • Assist as needed with the Equine Breeding Program. Breeding, foaling, record keeping and other duties as assigned.
  • Operate within an allotted budget.
  • Manage summer grazing and fixing/building fence when needed.
  • Provide an accurate annual feed request each fall to the UAES crop manager.
  • Coordinate with farrier such that hoof care is current for all animals and maintain associated records.
  • Assist program director and instructors with the purchase of horses and USU’s Annual Production Sale.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or equivalent in an agriculturally-related discipline.
  • Two years of crop production experience.
  • Ability to receive and ship materials – may require evening and weekend availability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbal and written, with vendors, and university staff and faculty members.
  • Requires ability to operate and maintain agricultural equipment and trucks.
  • Requires ability to read written instructions, regulations, and other documentation and use appropriate sources to locate valid information related to position responsibilities.
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License and ability to obtain Class A CDL required within first 60 days of employment
