Position Summary Are you passionate about animals, farms, and education? Portland Community College is looking for a Farm & Outreach Coordinator to manage the Rock Creek Farm.

The Farm & Outreach Coordinator provides care and management of the farm animals used in the Veterinary Technology program, maintains the Rock Creek campus farm and its facilities and equipment, and assists in the financial operation of the farm. The coordinator also develops partnerships with internal and external stakeholders that leverage the farm’s resources to meet the priorities of the college, its programs, and the community. This is a critical set of responsibilities that impacts animal welfare, community relations, and the health of the Veterinary Technology program.

Due to the potential need for round-the-clock caretaking, the position includes a three-bedroom house, located on the Rock Creek campus for the Coordinator to reside.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Basic husbandry of farm animals including feeding, watering, and daily assessment of health
  • Prompt communication of animal abnormalities or concerns to the USDA attending veterinarian
  • Breeding management and appropriate management of birthing for cows and small ruminants
  • Financial management of farm budget; balancing expenses vs. revenue streams
  • Collaboration and communication with veterinary technology program staff and faculty to ensure appropriate animal medical care, appropriate herd sizes, and support for veterinary technology classes
  • Collaboration with community partners to develop and host outreach activities with community farm stakeholders
  • Facilities and pasture evaluation, maintenance, and upkeep
  • Management of part time student employees

  • Demonstrated experience monitoring budgets and making fiscally responsible expenditure decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Associate degree in Animal Science, Agriculture or related discipline.
  • Five (5) years of experience working with farm animals including cattle, sheep and horses; and operating and performing minor troubleshooting of farm equipment, specifically tractors in various applications including bailing, and planting, harvesting and maintaining various field crops.

Position Grade 3

Starting Salary Expectations The first two steps of the range are: $56,139.00 and $58,105.00 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Work Environment

Work occurs outdoors and in outdoor structures (farm buildings and shop). Exposure to noise from equipment, dead or diseased animals, odors from livestock and plant amendments. Work hours vary with the season and requirements of the farm, livestock and programs.

Physical Requirements

Requires considerable physical effort including heavy lifting, digging, equipment operation and the use of tools, handling of large animals (e.g., cattle, sheep, horses), and extensive walking/standing.
