Essential Job Duties 

Faculty members in direct support of the program include individuals board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a clinical pharmacologist. Additional members of the Department have expertise in residue pharmacology, food safety, antimicrobial resistance, immunology, epidemiology and government practice as well as with the swine and poultry industries. The internship will provide training appropriate for a career in private general practice, academia, government or industry.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

The primary goal of this 1-year internship program is to provide clinical training that prepares individuals for a wide variety of careers with a focus on farm animals. The internship will provide the training appropriate for a career in private general practice, academia, government or industry. The majority of the internship will be spent working for the Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery service in the hospital and for the Ruminant Field service to gain clinical experience with small ruminants, beef (cow/calf) and dairy cattle, camelids and companion swine. 

Clinical training will include individual animal medicine and surgery, herd/flock level medicine and reproduction. Limited opportunities are also available for exposure to other areas, including equine internal medicine, pathology, radiology and others depending on the interest of the candidate. The intern will be expected to participate in some aspects of the farm animal health management teaching program which includes seminars, clinical teaching and continuing education. The intern will also be responsible for night and weekend emergency duty for farm animals in the Veterinary Hospital on a rotating basis with the other house officers. Interns participate in didactic training exercises including journal club (mandatory) and large animal internal medicine boards preparation seminars (optional).

The intern will have the option to undertake a suitable research project and prepare one manuscript suitable for publication during the program. Faculty mentors will help facilitate this requirement. An internship advisor and advisory committee are responsible for the intern’s program and progress. 

Interns will receive semi-annual written evaluations, which will be discussed with the intern’s advisory committee.

Primary case management responsibility in the hospital and in the field under faculty supervision. After hours emergency duty in the hospital on a rotating basis. Supervision of 4th year veterinary students. Participation in farm animal lab teaching. Participation in journal club. Participation in one research project with a goal of publication in a peer reviewed journal (optional).

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, EducationFood animal/mixed animal externships and clinical year rotation experiences.

Required License or CertificationEligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty licensure) in the State of NC. This can be obtained after successful acceptance into the program through the institutional employment licensing agreement.

A North Carolina Driver’s License is required. This must be obtained by the employee within 2 months of employment.
