Reporting to the Manager for Horticulture Research Farms at the CFAES Wooster Campus, the Research Farm Technician for Specialty Crops (Farm Coordinator 3) assists investigators and research staff with implementation of field experiments on vegetable crops and fruit crops. Provides collaborative, professional service to CFAES faculty and staff to implement field research to meet experimental objectives. Assists with instruction of student and seasonal employees to carry out field operations for specialty crops research. Lays out field plots, performs tillage, planting, weed control, pruning and canopy management of fruit and vegetable crops. Performs irrigation, harvesting and other cultural practices according to project protocols. Operates tractors with implements of various types and sizes and adjusts to varying crop and soil conditions. Operates, calibrates, adjusts, services and repairs farm machinery and specialized agricultural research equipment. Transports equipment to other field sites using truck/trailer. Applies agricultural chemicals, fertilizers and experimental treatments according to project protocols. Reports observations of crop conditions and pest damage. Assists with collection of harvest yield data, prepares fruit and vegetable samples; organizes and summarizes reports and transmits data. Assists with general operations, supply procurement, facility and grounds maintenance. Assists with installation various irrigation systems, and high tunnel greenhouse operations. Maintains detailed field operations and treatment application records. Assists with logistics for field days, student and outreach events. Performs duties at other research farms when requested. May work flexible schedules according to weather, soil and crop conditions. Position located at CFAES Wooster Campus.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED. Certification or vocational training may be required. Associate degree in relevant field may be preferred. 2 years of relevant experience required. 4-6 years of relevant experience preferred.

Required Experience: Basic Computer Skills: email, MS Excel, Word. Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a team work environment. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Two years experience in production of agronomic, fruit or vegetable crops. Possess or ability to obtain pesticide/fertilizer applicator license within 6 months of employment.

Desired Experience: Knowledge of field research methods. Proficient skills in operation and repair of farm machinery. Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic or practical knowledge to conduct agricultural research.

The pay range for this job profile is $15.00 – 19.39 hourly. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit’s available budget, the candidate’s qualifications and location.
