Peckham Inc. – Farm/Facilities Worker Level 1

SUMMARY

The Farm/Facilities Level I position assists in various roles at Peckham Farms and in maintaining Peckham facilities throughout the Lansing area. Primary duties of this position during the growing season are to assist in the planting, transplanting, weeding, maintenance, harvest and packing of fruits and vegetables at Peckham Farms. The season will fluctuate in length but generally falls between the months of June – October. At other times of the year, responsibilities may include general building maintenance, preventive building maintenance, hoop house maintenance and basic building, equipment, and machinery maintenance. Responsibilities may also include landscape maintenance, weed control, general cleaning, leaf removal, setup/removal of holiday decorations, and snow removal activities. This position utilizes a team approach for most projects and promotes Peckham’s vision, values, and services to all customers and stakeholders. Assists in maintaining organization wide quality standards. Must have access to reliable transportation for frequent trips to facilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow Peckham food and safety guidelines.
  • Cultivate soil, sow crops and control weeds by hand pulling and hoeing.
  • Clean and sterilize farm equipment.
  • Assist with harvest, pack, and processing activities. These include washing, grading, and packaging of produce, and preparing it for storage, market, or delivery while strictly following our Produce Safety Plan.
  • Assist with grounds maintenance with digging, planting, installing mulch, and weeding.
  • Assist with snow removal and clearing of emergency exits and walking areas, spreading salt & de-icer on walkways, constructing snow fences.
  • Assist in specialty cleaning of wall, ceiling, and floor surfaces.
  • Assist with setup and removal of holiday decorations around Lansing area facilities (i.e. hanging lights, setting up displays by following diagrams and verbal instructions).
  • Assist with general facility maintenance including repair, cleaning and upkeep of fixtures, appliances, storage racking, and furniture using hand tools.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work area and report any safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Ability to climb ladders and work from heights, and the ability to kneel and crouch for extended periods.
  • This job requires the ability to distinguish between red and green for harvest purposes.
  • This job requires candidates to bathe or shower and change clothes regularly (good hygiene is required for Food Safety Compliance).
  • Candidate to possess or obtain within 90 days a valid MI driver’s license.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in landscape or turf maintenance.
  • Experience operating farm equipment.
  • Experience working in a team setting and maintaining respectful communication.
  • Ability to stay on task independently.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Basic knowledge of agriculture and building maintenance
  • Ability to read simple documents, instructions, and manuals in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to follow and carry out written and oral instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills: counting, addition, and subtraction.

This job will require the use of wheelbarrows, shop vacs, rolling scaffolding, folding ladders, extension ladders, power washers, assorted hand tools, shovel, hoe, rake etc., string trimmers, lawn edgers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, push mowers, riding mowers, ATV, UTV, Golf Cart, Scissor lift, hand tools, pumps, sprinklers, snow blowers, and salt and fertilizer spreaders, spot spray cans.
