JOB SUMMARY:

The Farms and Gardens Program Manager will be responsible for oversight, coordination and expansion of farms and gardens in Fort Bend County. Based at Bates Allen Farm in Kendleton, the Program Manager plays a vital role in coordinating agricultural and horticultural initiatives within the Fort Bend County. This position involves managing various farms and gardens that contribute to increasing access to fresh produce for the community, promoting sustainable farming practices, supporting local nonprofits and increasing educational and workforce opportunities for residents.

The Program Manager will work closely with the Fort Bend County Parks and Recreation Department, farm and gardens staff, community members, volunteers and other stakeholders to ensure the success and growth of the county’s agricultural and gardening programs. This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of agricultural skills and farm management, and a passionate commitment to providing specific foods for improved public health.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain standards of production to ensure the highest quality produce.
  • Maintain farm infrastructure and landscape with the help of interns and volunteers.
  • Identify and develop relationships and opportunities with community partners, including nonprofits, faith institutions, Universities and County staff and elected officials.
  • Track and evaluate data related to farm usage.
  • Infrastructure planning, creation and maintenance.
  • Management of irrigation and composting programs.
  • Design, build and manage farming infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a team environment with proven leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated good organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Experience with government funding and programs.
  • Demonstrated farm planning experience and working knowledge of farm infrastructure.
  • Interest in working with youth and youth programs.
  • Experience with volunteer management.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required, Ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds, Able to work in the field, outdoor classroom and office including repetitive physical work.
  • Some evening or special event hours may be required.

SALARY RANGE: Salary will be based on experience and in accordance with Fort Bend County salary standards
