Offer DescriptionFaculty of LawFull Professor & Asper Chair of International Trade Law & Business TransactionsPosition #35300/35301The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba invites applications from legal scholars for a full-time probationary (tenure track) or tenured position at the rank of full Professor who will also be appointed for an initial and renewable 5-year term as the “Asper Chair in International Business and Trade Law.” This position will be appointed in the Faculty of Law for the purpose of teaching, studying and researching in the area of international trade law and international business transactions. The hiring committee welcomes applications from tenured full Professors or Associate Professors or equivalent appointments meeting the qualifications outlined below.The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba is at the forefront of legal education in Canada and is housed in one of Canada’s top research universities. It is western Canada’s oldest law school. The city of Winnipeg is culturally rich and diverse, steeped in the arts, and has long-standing and deep connections with Indigenous Nations.The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and pedagogical development.Areas of teaching and research interestThe Faculty welcomes applications from all candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. We especially invite applications from those with interests in international trade law and international business transactions. Topics of interest may include international economic law, international monetary law, financial regulation, intellectual property, international commercial dispute resolution, international development, investment law, international competition law, telecommunications law, international tax law, environmental law and/or sustainable development, sovereign debt and restructuring, business & human rights, and business, law & technology (e.g. supply chain and artificial intelligence).Candidates should express whether they are also able to contribute to the private law curriculum and business & human rights curriculum across the JD (Juris Doctor), Masters of Law (LLM) and Master of Human Rights (MHR) programs. The successful applicant will develop a focused research program preferably intersecting with or complementing their teaching duties. The position is expected to commence on July 1, 2025, or on a date mutually agreed upon. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, service, research, and pedagogical development.In addition, the successful candidate, as Chair, will serve on the Business Program Advisory Committee along with other faculty members to manage the budget of the business programs across the Asper Chair and Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law portfolios.Responsibilities include the ability to:

  • Conduct research in the areas articulated above and teaching courses, seminars, and developing programs in the areas of international trade law and international business transactions;
  • Teach in the private law core of the JD curriculum;
  • Potential to teach elective and graduate programs related to the areas articulated above;
  • Supervise and advise graduate students’ research;
  • Engage in service work in the Faculty, University, or broader practice/professional community;
  • Advance the mission of the Asper Chair including developing a digital knowledge presence in the area, developing connections with the business school, raising the profile of the program through arranging conferences & speakers (and other opportunities), enhancing clinical programming in the area; and
  • Contribute to a collegial work environment where equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, freedom of inquiry, respectful environment, and Indigenous legal traditions/orders are valued in light of the

QualificationsThe successful applicant will have:

  • an LLB or J.D. (Juris Doctor).;
  • an LLM (or cognate graduate degree); and
  • a PhD or doctoral equivalent in law or cognate discipline. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research/writing/policy work may be considered in lieu of doctoral studies.
  • A C.V. suitable for appointment as a tenured full Professor at the University of Manitoba at the Faculty of Law

  • Significant academic or related experience including demonstrated achievement in the fields of international trade law and international business transactions
  • Significant teaching or equivalent experience; and
  • Significant history of publications/writing/policy work in international trade law and international business transactions
