Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Future Telecoms Technology Policy unit. Future Telecoms is one of the technologies identified by the government as critical for the future. The team strives to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of developing the next generation of telecoms technologies which will become part of our critical national infrastructure. Examples of the unit’s work include ensuring the equipment in our 5G networks is diverse, resilient and secure, and planning for how new technologies, such as quantum and AI can be integrated into telecoms to enable future connectivity and considering the impact of digital innovations, like augmented/virtual reality.

You would be joining a friendly team of around 30 working in a high-profile policy area in DSIT’s Digital Infrastructure Directorate. We genuinely value our people and actively foster an open, inclusive and social team culture. We take time as a team to reflect on how we can support each other’s work and wellbeing to ensure we benefit from all team members’ experience and skills and help each other’s development. We are based across the UK, including London, Manchester and Darlington.

Person specification

We are recruiting for three roles in the Future Telecoms Technology Policy unit:

Future Telecoms Strategy Policy Advisor: As Future Telecoms Strategy Policy Advisor, you will contribute to developing and delivering policies that support the growth and scaling of telecoms technology start-ups and SMEs in the UK. You will build strong networks across government, the tech sector, and financing communities to ensure that government policy is aligned with the needs of the telecoms industry. Working with investors and businesses, you will provide insight into challenges faced by SMEs and help shape strategies to promote sustainable growth. Additionally, you will explore opportunities for future telecoms SMEs to expand into domestic and international markets, collaborating with cross-government teams to stimulate innovation and unlock export opportunities for UK businesses.

International Policy Advisor: As an International Policy Advisor, you will lead efforts to strengthen international collaboration and align the development of future telecoms technologies with UK priorities. Leading on a specific region (for example Europe, Asia Pacific or the Americas), you will build relationships with government, industry stakeholders, and research communities, facilitating collaborations and promoting UK telecoms innovation in the region. You will lead regional-specific initiatives, such as policy engagement or SME R&D missions, and ensure cooperation between the UK and key international partners on emerging telecoms technologies. You will also work closely with other international teams across government, including Overseas Post, and deliver shared priorities, while remaining flexible to changing UK objectives.

Diverse and Resilient Supply Chains Policy Advisor: In this role, you will play a key part in improving telecoms security and resilience by addressing market concentration risks and supporting telecoms diversification. You will develop and implement policies to mitigate risks in the telecoms supply chain, working closely with government and industry partners. This includes responding to security challenges, shaping new policy approaches, and supporting wider government initiatives in telecoms and investment. You will manage relationships with stakeholders, contribute to cross-government coordination, and represent the team’s work with confidence at various forums.

Essential:

  • Ability to develop and implement policy or strategy.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex topics for senior officials.
