SP Energy Networks (SPEN) is transforming its Telecoms business! Telecoms are a key part of the network’s business and a cornerstone in the evolution towards net zero. We’re implementing a new Telecom operating model, allowing us to bring our Telecoms in-house, from inception, to design, and delivery. This role will lead the centre of excellence and drive the change within this new structure.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Head of Smart Grid Operations, the Head of Telecoms will be responsible for SPEN Telecoms Network including Design, Strategy, Capital Delivery and Operations. You’ll line manage Telecoms Sub-Team Leads and multiple 3rd party sub-contractors, to deliver the major telecoms transformation, in line with DESNZ, Ofgem compliant with Critical National Infrastructure Obligations.

Within this role, you’ll review and set the Telecoms Strategy for the team, reporting on SLA, CAPEX, OPEX delivery to Head of SGO, being the point of escalation for the SPEN business. You’ll be responsible for effectively manage Telecoms contractors (around 150-200 contractor workforce) and deal with multi-million contracts This is a senior role, working at a global level. You’ll carry out reviews, and be responsible for ensuring 24×7 operational integrity, cybersecurity resilience, reliable performance and high availability of Telecoms services and assets.

A key part of this role will be to create and implement a road map, continuously monitoring progress, including tracking financial commitments to Ofgem and Iberdrola group.

You’ll implement an asset management system, to harmonise multiple legacy, proprietary systems, consistently horizon scanning for new innovative solutions, and planning the evolution of both the technical solutions delivered and for the future evolution of the team.

Driving safety culture, ensuring all legislation and company rules, policies and procedures are adhered to, leading and coaching a team of people (including staff who are Operationally Authorised) to deliver agreed results and provide services and solutions in line with company safety, customer service and engineering standards.

Ensuring innovation is applied across the whole team, including collaborating with external parties and translating these developments into policies and plans to manage risk and maximise value for the business. 

What you’ll bring

  • Demonstrable experience of senior line management role(s) in an operational, regulatory or project management environment preferably in the Telecoms sector.
  • Engineering degree (Telecoms, Electrical or Computer Engineering)
  • Operations experience
  • Technical skills in Telecoms
  • Cyber security awareness
  • Project Management skills
  • Experience dealing with multi-million contracts
  • Demonstrable record of Change Management both technical and cultural
  • Able to deliver and adapt to changes in a fast-paced environment
