Job description
The International School of Brussels is a K through 12, inclusive school. The High School offers AP classes, a US High School Diploma, IB DP Diploma, BTEC Diploma, and Individualised Diploma for students in Intensive Learning Support. The student body is currently representative of over 65 nationalities among its 475 students. ISB is accredited by the Council of International Schools, Middle States Association for Schools and Colleges, and the International Baccalaureate Organisation.Key responsibilities
- Report to the Head of High School and Head of High School Counselling
- Work collaboratively with other members of the High School Counselling team on all matters of the program
- Oversee a caseload of approximately a quarter of the students in the three year High School with responsibility for their academic progress and their post-secondary applications
- Lead meetings for the course selection process and oversee student pathways while in the HS at ISB; this includes academic planning and monitoring, goal-setting, personal and social happiness, balance and wellness
- Liaise with other counsellors across the other three divisions of ISB
- Participates in the creation and facilitation of College and Career presentations, information sessions, and other related activities
- Collaborates with the High School Leadership Team on monitoring student progress
- Collaborates with the IB Coordinators, Head of High School, and other counsellors on processing final results and supporting students through the process of receiving results and gaining places in universities. Some responses in summer may be necessary.
- Works in partnership with parents to support the success of students at ISB and with their post-secondary goals and expectations
- Support the transition of students from Admissions and from the Middle School through their years in high school and beyond to their post-secondary destinations
- Support the wider work of School Counselling as required by the Head of High School.
- Liaise with global universities and post-secondary learning institutions to learn about their admissions procedures and to help develop the profile of ISB.
General Counseling:
- Serve as first point of contact for parents and teachers looking to support the student
- Provide a pastoral level of care and compassion for all students
- Facilitate students in need of longer term support to the High School Social Emotional Counsellor or School Psychologist
Academic Counselling:
- Participate on the Student Study Team – attending weekly meetings, following up on actions from these meetings.
- Conduct group and individual course scheduling meetings for caseload.
- Build individual schedules and process course change requests, liaising with students, parents, and colleagues as necessary.
- Act as an academic case manager – developing appropriate pathways with students, developing student schedules, monitoring academic progress, liaising with parents, etc. Familiarity with PowerSchool is preferable.
- Liaise with Learning Support Department, Intensive Learning Support Department, English Language Development, Social Emotional Counselling, and attend ILP Meetings to support students.
College and Careers Counselling:
- Hold a detailed understanding of the key features of and application processes for all of the following university systems: the UK, the United States, Western Europe and Canada.
- Understand how to process post-secondary student applications.
- Have a willingness to learn other applications systems as needed.
- Be familiar with university application management software and other counselling related programs.
- Perform data analysis related to academic and college counselling as needed.
- Host on-campus and virtual university admission representatives.
- Conduct parent and student information evenings or other related programming.
- Establish professional networks within the international counselling community.
- Establish professional networks within the Higher Education global community.
