Job Description

Basic Purpose 

Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities involving directing the operations of farm and/or livestock programs, or food production and/or processing programs at a correctional institution. 

Typical Functions

  • Performs all typical functions of a Dairy Herdsman such as to day operations and management of nutrition (TMRrations), health, reproduction, milk production and staff resources (staff and inmate).
  • Plans and supervises the work of inmates in soil preparation, planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvesting and storing of field crops and produce; supervises the operation and maintenance of farm machinery.
  • Orders and supervises the grinding and mixing of feed and the watering and feeding of livestock.
  • Maintains herd health according to established standards and performs routine veterinary work.
  • Supervises and participates in processing, packaging, inventory control, and distribution of food products.
  • Inspects barns and facilities; supervises cleaning and sanitation and makes minor repairs as needed; orders materials and equipment as required.
  • Supervises milking of cows, cleaning of equipment and cleanliness of general dairy area.
  • Plans and regulates breeding programs.
  • Keeps production records, breeding records and time cards.
  • Plans and maintains preventive maintenance program for vehicles, equipment, and structures.

Level Descriptor

This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities involving the management or supervision of multiple agricultural and/or food enterprises. Will directly supervise other employees, as well as perform managerial work in planning, developing and coordinating activities of the enterprise to include, but not be limited to purchasing inputs, record keeping and budgeting, livestock and feed production, food and vegetable processing, and overall enterprise management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include:

  • Knowledge of dairy cattle and dairy operations. Will oversee all fresh cows and day to operations. Will monitor sorting and moving of cows.
  • Knowledgeable in dairy nutrition and TMR feeding. Will oversee pasture and feed management.
  • Knowledgeable in disease control, have the ability to identify illness, injury treatment, pregnancy checking and other animal health activities.
  • Knowledge of dairy reproductive management. in heat detection and artificial insemination techniques is a benefit.
  • Knowledge of calf and maternity care management.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation, maintenance, and routine repair of vehicles, equipment, and structures. Will oversee service and repairs on dairy and agriculture equipment
  • Experience managing a dairy with a track record of producing the highest quality milk. Will oversee all dairy record keeping from production to veterinary treatments to reproduction.
  • Able to communicate successfully with a broad spectrum of individuals to maximize quality and production. Able to manage and motivate employees through positive leadership. Will supervise and coordinate activities of health technicians, feeders, bedders, milkers, and other supporting
  • Knowledge of supervisory and instructional practices and procedures of a food production and/or processing operation.
  • Ability to learn and adopt DOC policies and procedures, including directing inmates.
  • Ability to learn and adopt all applicable policies and procedures of the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry
  • Ability to learn and adopt accounting procedures for a correctional setting.
  • Ability is required to implement plans and programs in Agri-Services Dairy Operations; to establish and maintain working relationships with others; to perform routine veterinary work; to maintain records; to complete oral and written reports relating to agricultural or food production programs; to manage and direct Agri-Services’ milk production and processing enterprise; and to supervise and direct the work of others.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of eight years of experience in agriculture and/or food production or processing operations; or a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, food or meat science, or a closely related field plus four years of experience in an agricultural operation and/or food production/processing operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

The Department of Corrections has determined that some positions in this job family are safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8.
