IT/Telecom Support Specialist II (12518, Grade 22)

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking an experienced IT TELECOM SUPPORT SPECIALIST II as a member of a network and security group for the Information Technology Services Division of the Prince George’s County, Department of Parks and Recreation. This team is responsible for the support, maintenance and optimization of the network and its security. Under the direction of management, they provide support, test, assess and diagnosis network and security events and issues a like. They respond within service level agreements, alert and assign action to system owners, communicates to stakeholders, and escalates issues not resolved within timeframe agreements. 

Applicants should have strong computer skills in and a thorough understanding of (1) microcomputers, local area/wide network servers, routers, network communications hardware, and computer network hardware and microcomputer peripheral equipment; (2) diagnosing and correcting hardware and software problems; (3) Microsoft Office Suite, databases, electronic project management tools, and, in addition, Apple products and equipment. Applicants should also have the ability to train others in the use of computers including hardware and software; analyze and resolve user problems; communicate clearly and effectively (orally and in writing); and establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and vendors.

  • Assists with the installation, support, maintenance, and monitoring of the department’s networking equipment (switching, routing, firewalls, wireless, etc.). Makes recommendations as needed to management and procurement.
  • Assists with the network team projects, documentation, goals, timelines, and provides status reports as necessary.
  • Assists with circuits (adds, changes, deletes) with department service providers (Comcast, Verizon, I-net). Follows up to ensure appropriate billing for any adds, changes, or deletes and updates internal systems as required. (i.e., Energy Cap)
  • Assists with the department’s IT security posture through the management of systems (end point protection, software, response handling, security awareness training, O365 monitoring, etc.).
  • Represents the department for organization level IT collaborations (MIG, adds, deletes and change projects for enterprise security.) as needed.
  • Routinely monitors, reports, and recommends action on security changes through vulnerability assessments and security audits.
  • Assists with the administration, support, maintenance and monitoring of network services and protocols (IP management, Name Resolution, Certificate Authority, VPN, etc.)
  • Assists with the physical infrastructure of the department’s networking (cable and rack installation, network box security, etc.)
  1. Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Management Systems, or any related field.
  2. Three (3) years of experience in information technology support functions.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together when total five (5) years.
  4. Depending upon area of assignment, a valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with Cisco, Aerohive, Palo Alto, Microsoft Azure
  • Robust troubleshooting skills
  • Strong writing skills and oral presentation ability.
  • IT-related certifications. (i.e. Cisco, Microsoft, CompTIA, etc.)
  • MCSE, CCNE or related certification and three years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
