Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Lead Engineer – Thermal Attribute to be based at our customer location in Gaydon, the UK.Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.The Role

  • The role is is part of the Vehicle Engineering (VE) attributes group. The team has delivery ownership for Thermal and Aerodynamic attributes requirements including interfaces to efficiency delivery, BEV systems thermal robustness, occupant climate function, the overall drag and lift characteristics of the vehicle, the provision for cooling airflow for powertrain, driveline and brakes, and the management of component temperatures.
  • You will report to the Attributes Manager and be responsible for technical virtual development as well as support for physical development of TASE deliverables. This will cover analysis, methods development and correlation to physical test for both test facilities and in-market environments.
  • The thermal attribute covers all external airflow, from overall vehicle shape and feature effects on drag and lift generation to front-end aperture design, brake cooling, and under-hood airflow, as well as infotainment, electric vehicle and hybrid system thermal requirements. In addition, it also covers management of the engine bay and under body thermal environment.

Area of Responsibility

  • Ensure robust attribute target definition through completion of vehicle/product benchmarking and future activities, physical and virtual testing, measurement and visual assessments.
  • Work with system owners to ensure robust target and requirements cascade in support of overall vehicle level targets (e.g. via RMDV, Doors, TRM).
  • Build models for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and heat management analysis
  • Planning and delivery of vehicle and system level data inputs across all assigned programmes and additional impacted vehicle programmes.
  • Planning, implementing & conducting relevant benchmark, development, integration and DV test activities.
  • Provide data to the Vehicle Test and Development team to guide instrumentation and focus the test activities
  • Reporting Attribute status through robust documentation in support of relevant programme gateways.
  • Analyse TASE attributes performance through the Virtual Series phases using the TASE toolset
  • Communicate with Attribute Team Leaders and CoCs to provide technical solutions to thermal and aerodynamic problems.
  • Communicate and present technical guidance and recommendations to all levels of the business.
  • Support lessons learnt and continuous improvement activities from all programmes as best practice.
  • Actively contribute towards Attribute strategy reviews, future studies and capability development projects.

Knowledge / Experience

  • Experience of BEV vehicle thermal systems and integration required
  • Experience of at least one meshing tool as well as a very good understanding of thermodynamic and aerodynamic principles.
  • Proven track record of CFD/CAE simulation methods development as well as experience in the use of CFD software
  • Experience of working within a vehicle engineering environment and a broad knowledge of whole vehicle engineering and technologies.
  • Experience of defining and delivering to attribute targets and requirements using a data driven approach.
  • Experience of planning, implementing and conducting vehicle and product appraisal, testing and sign-off activities.
  • Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills, including the utilisation of standard problem-solving tools.
  • Experience of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Design of Experiments (DoE).
  • Well experienced in Microsoft software packages- particularly Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of engineering project management fundamentals.
  • Full driving licence valid for UK use.
