Your Role:
We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Farm Manager to oversee the operations of our company-owned farms. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing daily farm activities, ensuring optimal egg production, maintaining animal welfare, and leading a dedicated team. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a passion for sustainable agriculture.
What You’ll Do:
People and Stewardship
- Lead and develop a team of Flex Farmers (some of our future Vital Farms growers!) and farm facilities maintenance staff.
- Onboards new Flex Farmers, acting as subject matter expert for new producers.
- Provide feedback and support to our Flex Farmers.
- Coach Flex Farmers on best production and animal husbandry practices.
- Oversee and provide guidance on production area maintenance activities.
- Responsible for timecard review and Flex Farmer performance management.
- Engages Flex Farmers in a “flock review” during cleanout periods.
- Constantly look for opportunities to make processes more efficient and in alignment with overall organizational goals.
- Maintain cross functional partnerships with compliance, accounting, and R&D thought partners.
- Manage and maintain all farm ordering and supplies.
- Take a proactive approach to issue resolution including root cause analyses and error proofing.
- Allocates resources as efficiently as possible across our network of farms.
Accelerator Farm Program
- Responsible for overseeing the execution of rodent, fly, and pest control program.
- Implements and oversees Biosecurity Program.
- Oversees the implementation of the Company Farms Quality and Safety Program; working with the company farms compliance manager to complete a monthly quality and safety audit of all barns.
- Conducts annual employee biosecurity and euthanasia training.
- Responsible for all required record keeping including production records, accounting records, and training documents.
- Works hand in hand with the company farms compliance manager to ensure continued compliance with all applicable government and customer regulations.
- Ensures all barns are audit ready; all the time.
- Oversees the implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for all company barns and facilities.
- Attends all audits of company farms and hosts follow-up call in conjunction with company farms compliance manager to report on audit results.
- Oversees execution and completion of regulatory and customer audit corrective actions.
For our Girls on Grass:
- Works with our Flex Farmers to ensure quality eggs come from all layer houses, taking all measures to minimize checks originating at any point on the farm.
- Coordinate with feed suppliers to ensure timely feed delivery to farms and delivery of proper feed formulation.
- Responsible for general bird health including alerting Director, GM, and Veterinarian of any issues and following the guidance of the veterinarian and nutritionist as needed.
- Hosts weekly production call for all company farms to report on health and productivity of each flock.
- Ensures proper pasture, paddock, and rest and recovery management.
- Conducts monthly “well-checks” of each flock to ensure every flock’s health is maintained at the highest standard.
- Works with nutritionist to select appropriate diets for each flock weekly.
- Build and implement feed and lighting schedules for all incoming flocks.
- Conducts all routine swabbing and bloodwork including lab submission and veterinary follow-up.
- Maintains partnerships with pullet-producers to ensure delivery of happy, healthy pullets.
- Schedule all pullet deliveries and depopulations including transport, catch crews, and spent-hen purchasers.
What You Bring to the Table:
- Bachelors Degree in an Agricultural or related field preferred
- 5+ years of experience in farm management, poultry experience required
- Located within commutable distance to all locations that barns are being built in Southern Indiana or willingness to relocate.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
- Experience directly or indirectly leading a team
- Must be willing to work weekends, nights, and holidays as needed.
- Ability to travel 25-35% for company events, team meetings and other business needs.
- Effective communication skills and creative problem-solving ability
- Great organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
