What You Will Do

As a Network Professional 2, you will work in the Network Services (ISD-NS) group Network Operations Center Team, which provides 24/7 network support to the Laboratory and is responsible for monitoring, managing and maintaining network assets on all LANL networks. ISD-NS is primarily a customer focused group and part of the Infrastructure Services Division (ISD), which is responsible for the architectural design, implementation and maintenance of LANL’s open and classified networks.

In this role, you will be responsible for troubleshooting Cisco switch and router network issues, both wired and wireless. You will also be asked to troubleshoot switches, routers, and wireless in a wide variety of areas across the Laboratory. You will utilize ServiceNow to track and manage tickets. You’ll also use SolarWinds to monitor and manage devices. This position is a great opportunity to expand your networking knowledge and grow.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience replacing, upgrading, configuring and maintaining network devices.
  • Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing and restoring enterprise network environments as quickly as possible.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting wired (such as copper, fiber) and wireless connection mediums.
  • Basic experience using network management tools, such as SNMP, SYSLOG, SSH, including viewing / creating alarms, configuration management, and/or troubleshooting syslog information.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Cisco or Arista switches and routers.
  • Experience with creating / modifying network diagrams.
  • Experience with incident management.
  • Experience with routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, and/or BGP.
  • Experience with networking protocols such as STP, VLANs, LACP, and/or IPSEC.
  • Cisco Certifications / Juniper Certifications

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reaching overhead, bending, kneeling, reaching horizontally, reaching down, climbing a ladder, operating a motor vehicle, running / replacing network cables, typing, gripping with the hands, ability to lift more than 30 lbs, and replacing various networking equipment (switches, Access Points, Line-cards, modules, etc.)

Work Environment: Working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, operation of motor vehicles. You will be asked to work in Laboratory areas that are in close proximity to areas performing hazardous work.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
