This Network Capability Manager will report to the Head of Technology structure)) and will work within the Strategy Regulation and Support Services based in our Ipswich, Fore Hamlet office. You will be a permanent employee.
You will attract a salary of £100,000.00 and a bonus of 10%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) – 3 days in the office and 2 remote

Job Purpose:
You will define and deliver the UKPN Communication Network Strategy. They are accountable for the performance, reliability, and resilience of Corporate and OT networks to meet our needs.
You will manage a team of three network professionals who will design, implement, and support our communication networks in the delivery of this network strategy and provide technical assurance to communication network products and services provided by third party service providers.
Principal Accountabilities
- Team Leadership:
- Direct leadership and development of three network engineers.
- Manage the planning and allocation of resources and tasks to ensure team performance and project delivery.
- Foster a collaborative team environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement.
- Develop and implement the UKPN Communications Network Strategy ensuring that:
- It delivers on all current our requirements.
- It is cost effective and provides good value for money.
- It takes into consideration all security and cyber requirements.
- It provides scalability to meet new requirements.
- Develop and implement network procedures to support the UKPN Communications Network Strategy.
- Evaluate new technology and provide expertise within the communications network space.
- Foster an inclusive and collaborative culture within the workplace.
- Budget Management:
- Manage the budget allocated to network infrastructure, ensuring cost effectiveness and return on investment.
- Partner Engagement and Communication
- Be the primary contact for communications networks within the UKPN.
- Communicate infrastructure plans and strategies to partners at all levels, ensuring alignment and support for programs.
- Oversee the relationship with third party suppliers ensuring they represent value for money and are held to account for the quality of their products and services.
- Project Management
- Lead infrastructure projects from conception through to completion, ensuring they meet deadlines, budgets, and requirements.
- Manage vendor relationships and contracts for procuring infrastructure services and equipment.
- Compliance and Security
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
- Maintain security protocols and disaster recovery strategies to safeguard information assets against potential threats.
Nature and Scope
You will report to the Head of Technology within Information Systems Group, working with other important managers to ensure network infrastructure robustly supports UK Power Networks operational and strategic needs. You will be a leader who is committed to delivering high-performance network services and infrastructure solutions that support and drive the business forward.
The team vision is “To operate the best utility owned communications network in the UK ensuring the Secure and Reliable control of our electricity network whilst promoting new technology to support net zero for all”.
You will set the technical direction and strategy of all communication networks supporting UKPN services.
You will be responsible for a vast on-prem network infrastructure estate spanning multiple OT data centres, and tens of thousands of points of presence underpinning the work of several thousand users across the business.
Qualifications:
You will have experience managing Communication Network capability and should hold a degree or equivalent industry qualifications/experience. Also, you will demonstrate experience in the following areas:
- Degree in IT or Electrical field or equivalent experience.
- Technical Proficiency: knowledge of communications networking:
- Telecommunications, DWDM, Optical Transport Networks, SDH
- IP network Design, LAN and WAN technologies
- Familiarity with on-prem and cloud technologies.
- Experience managing technical teams and projects you will mentor, inspire, and lead a team towards achieving strategic goals.
- Clearly convey complex IT/OT strategies and systems to a non-technical audience.
- Develop strategic plans for infrastructure development that align with our goals.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the capability to anticipate potential issues and implement solutions.
- Budget Management: Experience in budget management and resource allocation to maximise effectiveness of technology investments.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of the regulatory environment impacting OT infrastructure, with an emphasis on compliance and cyber security.
