Department 00640 – Ctr for High Perform Computing Job Summary
This position is a network administrator requiring 2-5 years of experience in IT related work, preferably with network equipment from vendors such as Cisco, HPE, Arista, Palo Alto, Juniper or similar. This position will help maintain the day-to-day operations of Ethernet switches, Infiniband switches, routers, and firewalls. The applicant will need to demonstrate an understanding of the TCP/IP stack. The position will also require familiarity with troubleshooting end hosts and end-to-end connectivity issues.
The job will have an in-person component and remote component. The position will work mostly between office and data center environments with flexibility for occasional remote work. The position will work in the university data center mounting devices, configuring devices, installing cabling, labeling cabling, and labeling ports. The data center portion of the job will require lifting equipment and operating a server lift in order to mount equipment into racks. The data center portion of the job will also involve gaining familiarity with water cooling, power, air flow, and other environmental aspects.
The position will develop skills in and work with network protocols such as IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, SNMP, IB over IP, etc. The position will work closely with the Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) monitoring team to pull metrics from network and environmental devices. The position will also develop skills in automation and data center management.
The applicant should have some basic Linux skills and basic Windows skills in order to help troubleshoot network stacks to the end devices in collaboration with others. The position is highly collaborative and requires working with different people throughout CHPC, as well as with different groups on campus and at Utah Education and Telehealth Network. The position will also be responsible in helping to plan, troubleshoot, maintain and thoroughly document all aspects of the existing network, future iterations, and the environmental monitoring of a data center. The position will be responsible for interacting with end users and following up on service tickets relating to network issues.
Responsibilities
Performs tasks associated with the engineering of network systems used in data communications services, including fiber optic, twisted pair, IP systems, switches, routers and LAN/WAN Systems. Collaborates with other team members and groups to identify and develop scalable network designs, solutions and policy recommendations. Ensures continued smooth operations of the global network infrastructure. Supports internal application groups by identifying and presenting their network-impacting requirements to the rest of the network engineering team. Supports and leads implementation of growing network infrastructure. Prepares various documents such as work orders, purchase orders, records equipment, facilities and systems, and budget paperwork.
