Job Summary
The Network Engineer will perform routine, preventative, corrective, and emergency maintenance on all the Switching, Transmission, HVAC, Power, Enhanced Service platform elements for mobile and fixed services at various infrastructure locations including Exchange, CEV, FAN, HUB, mobile and customer sites. These operational services must be delivered to required standards and timeframes that based on business requirements, will entail 24/7 shift work, on- call or recall arrangements in order to provide rapid response to critical incidents.
Key Responsibilities
In the case of exchanges, field network engineers are the custodian of the exchange sites. This extends to providing specialist, Field support of critical infrastructure and platforms in Exchanges, Data Centres, and other facilities. Responsibility includes visual inspections and monitoring of building management systems e.g., electrical & fire alarm panels, air conditioning & other monitoring devices. The Network Engineer will be responsible for first in support for any activities that has the potential to impact network elements operating at optimum levels.
The field network engineer also provides support to the exchange subject matter experts (SME) by monitoring the operations within the exchange to ensure set standards are met. They must also be familiar with and can also contribute to refining standard procedures, standards through operation manuals, work instructions and Method of Procedures.
It is incumbent on the field engineer to also develop themselves and stay abreast of technologies. Importantly they are part of a broader team and must actively work to contribute and promote teamwork – both with their own immediate team, but also across departments with whom they will be expected to work closely with. At times they will be asked to mentor/coach new field engineer cadets providing advice, guidance and on the job training
Experience and Qualifications
- A technical qualification (Cert III, Cert IV or diploma) in Telecommunications Engineering (or related Engineering discipline) or equivalent.
- Five years’ experience in fixed transmission networks with an excellent knowledge of network design and technologies.
- Understanding of transmission and digital systems, switching, HFC, Consumer Products, Mobile systems including 5G/ edge technology.
- Good understanding of Facility/Environment systems.
- Broad knowledge of critical infrastructure such as DC systems, rectifiers, batteries, PDUs, UPS systems, fire alarms and fire panels, HVAC, air handlers, chillers, grounding, DC cabling.
- Office 365/ Tableau/ VMR/ SNOW
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, to liaise effectively at all levels both within and outside the organisation.
- Ability to influence senior leaders
