This position is located at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC), Oregon State University in Aurora, Oregon.

The position will provide support for the Metro-area Small Farms programming at the NWREC Learning Farm. This position will also assist with various workshop conducted by the program.

This recruitment will be used to fill four student technical positions for the OSU-North Willamette Research Center at Oregon State University (a maximum of 20 hours per week during school year/ 40 hours during school holidays and summer break).

Position Duties

  • Student employee will assist with field preparations, such as; planting, spreading amendments, transplanting and direct seeding in field, irrigation setup (including drip), water monitoring and moving irrigation pipe during harvest season, installing trellis and training crops, weeding with hand tools and helping setup the cultivating tractor, harvesting, post-harvest crop cleanup, and data entry, collection and organization.
  • Employee will also assist with seeding and monitoring seedlings in propagation house and work with learning farm team to mark off crops for gleaners, as needed.
  • Student employee will assist with preparations for various field days and workshops. Tasks include making and installing signs for field day, tents/tables setup and event registrations, organizing equipment and storage areas.
  • Student employee will assist small farm program staff with evaluating crop varieties and soil moisture levels.
  • Duties related to Small Farm School include assisting with updating program website, reviewing workshop titles and descriptions, formatting and printing the workshop program agenda, contacting potential sponsors and exhibitors, helping with registration, and event set-up and tear-down.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma
  • Some Undergraduate Horticulture training
  • Must be at least 18 year of age
  • Attention to detail
  • Perform assigned tasks without close supervision
  • Capable of working outside and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Student employees (but not all employees) may be selected to drive to off-site locations, as needed, at the request of the farm manager. Drivers must be over 18 years old and have successfully completed OSU’s required motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000et seq.12

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Experience and interest in Organic farming
  • Experience with Tractors (for students over 18) 
  • Familiarity with Excel, Word, and willingness to learn Drupal and Adobe InDesign

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Student employees for this position will be working during the summer, but limited positions may also be available throughout the school year and during school breaks.
