Job title:

PhD Scholarschip Electronics and Informatics: Embedded and AI technology for biomedical applications

Company

Job description

Offer DescriptionThe use of AI on wearable devices for advanced physiological monitoring faces significant limitations primarily due to resource constraints, including limited processing power, memory, and storage capacity, which restrict the complexity and size of deployable AI models. Additionally, the need for energy efficiency to preserve battery life poses a challenge, as AI algorithms, particularly deep learning models, are often computationally intensive and consume substantial power. Ensuring real-time processing is another hurdle, as AI algorithms must deliver immediate feedback or interventions, necessitating low-latency performance. Moreover, the variability and noise in biomedical signals, privacy concerns, and the need for robust and secure data handling further complicate the effective implementation of AI in wearable devices.Recent advancements in embedded AI, edge AI, tinyML or neuromorphic technologies have significantly enhanced the capabilities of wearables in biomedical signal processing. However, the development of ML models for such a constrained devices is still challenging. The goal of this PhD scholarship at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is to address the tension between model accuracy, power efficiency and accuracy while exploiting the characteristics of physiological monitoring.Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature reviews and stay updated with the latest research in embedded AI, edge AI, neuromorphic computing, and biomedical signal processing.
  • Design and develop innovative AI algorithms and hardware solutions.
  • Perform simulations, experiments, and validation studies to assess the performance of the developed systems.
  • Publish research findings in international peer-reviewed journals and present at high-impact international conferences.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Mentor undergraduate and master’s students working on related projects.

The mandate includes, to a limited extent, coordinating and supervising exercises, practical and projects (WPO) in course units within the programmes of the Faculty of Engineering. The concrete assignment will be determined annually in consultation. In this respect, you have a sound knowledge of the following subjects: programming concepts, software development and AI algorithms.Profile:

  • Master in (Applied) Computer Science, Electronics and Informatics or Physics with affinity for electronics and informatics.
  • You have excellent research skills.
  • Strong background in AI, machine learning, signal processing, and hardware design.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C/C++. Knowledge of hardware description languages (e.g., VHDL, Verilog) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of embedded systems, edge computing frameworks, and neuromorphic computing technologies.
  • In the context of teaching support, good pedagogical qualities are also essential, such as being able to convey concepts, understand the necessary learning steps, design a challenging curriculum with the necessary creativity, and motivate and enthusiasm students. Also important is patience and exuding a certain authority based on knowledge and experience more than on a typical teacher-pupil hierarchical relationship.
  • You have an excellent command of English. It is recommended that you also speak and write Dutch. Candidates who are not proficient in Dutch should be prepared to actively improve their Dutch language skills to the B2 level.
  • You have not performed any works in the execution of a mandate as an assistant, paid from operating resources, over a total (cumulated) period of more than 12 months.

The VUB wants to be a reflection of the society where everyone’s talent is valued, regardless of gender, age, religion, skin color, migration background, disability and neurodiversity.Offer:You’ll be offered a full-time PhD-scholarship, for 12 months (extendable up to max. 48 months, on condition of the positive evaluation of the PhD activities), with planned starting date 01/10/2024.At the VUB, you’re guaranteed an open, involved and diverse workplace where you are offered opportunities to (further) build on your career.As well as this, you will also enjoy various other benefits:

  • Extensive homeworking options, a telework allowance of 50 euros per month OR an internet fee of 20 euros per month;
  • An open and informal working environment where attention is paid to work-life balance, and exceptional holiday arrangements with 35 days of leave (based on a fulltime contract), closure between Christmas and New Year and 3 extra leave days;
  • Cost-free hospitalisation insurance;
  • Full reimbursement of your home-to-work commute with public transport according to VUB-policy, and/or compensation if you come by bike;
  • A wide selection of meals in our campus restaurants at attractive prices;
  • Excellent and affordable facilities for sport and exercise, a range of discounts via **Benefits@Work (**in all kinds of shops, on flights, in petrol stations, amusement parks…) and Ecocheques;
  • Nursery near campus, discount on holiday camps;
  • The space to form your job content and to continuously learn through our VUB learning platforms and training courses;
  • And finally: great colleagues with a healthy drive.
