If so, you might be the ideal candidate for the Applied Science Manager role in the Microsoft Word Writing Intelligence team.The Microsoft Word Writing Intelligence team has a 25-year track record of creating AI-powered writing assistance features with a vision of bringing out the best writer in everyone. The team have recently launched a set of groundbreaking Copilot features that help users to dramatically enhance productivity and creativity throughout their writing journey from start to finish.Responsibilities:The mission of our group is to advance intelligent reading and writing assistance in M365 and to make fundamental contributions to advancing the state-of-the-art in language technology within Microsoft and in industry.As an applied scientist manager, you will lead a team of talented applied scientists who are passionate about creating cutting-edge NLP solutions for M365 users. You will

  • Review business and product requirements and incorporate state-of-the-art research occurring at Microsoft and the academic field to formulate a roadmap that will meet business goals and customer needs.
  • Nurture and grow collaborative relationships with product or business group leaders inside or outside Microsoft and provide expertise or technology to create business impact.
  • Manage the end-to-end delivery of AI projects that enhance the writing experience of millions of customers across various scenarios and domains.
  • Evaluate and adopt the best tools, processes, technologies, and methods to ensure the team’s productivity, efficiency, and excellence.
  • Ensure that the team’s research and solutions adhere to the principles and practices of responsible AI and mitigate any potential risks or harms to the customers, the society, and the environment.
  • Foster a culture of learning, innovation, collaboration, and inclusion within the team, and provide coaching, mentoring, and recognition to help the team members grow.

Qualifications:Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, or related fields, with a focus on NLP and machine learning.
  • 5+ years of experience in leading and managing applied science teams in industry or academia, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality and impactful AI solutions in a fast-paced and agile environment.
  • Strong expertise in NLP and machine learning. Fluency with recent NLP & ML advancements.
  • Proficiency in Python, C#, or other programming languages, and hands-on experience with popular AI frameworks and tools, such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, OpenAI or similar.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms, such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, and familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, and MLOps practices.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills and a customer-centric mindset.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in publishing impactful work such as patents, libraries, datasets, peer-reviewed papers that showcase you and your team’s cutting-edge research and solutions.
  • Experience in presenting at conferences or other events in the research/industry community to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.
  • Experience in conducting applied research projects using deep learning and NLP to solve challenging customer problems and deliver innovative solutions.
