About the roleWe are seeking an experienced Principal Drainage Design Engineer to lead drainage and water management solutions for Rail Infrastructure projects across the UK. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, coordination, and delivery of drainage systems within the rail sector, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practice.What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the design and management of drainage systems for Rail Infrastructure projects, including trackside, station, and depot drainage.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior engineers and design teams.
  • Develop and review sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) and flood risk assessments in accordance with UK regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with Network Rail, HS2, and other relevant drainage and

environmental standards (e.g., DMRB, CIRIA C753, SuDS Manual).

  • Conduct hydraulic modelling and analysis using industry-standard software such as

MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow, InfoWorks ICM, and Civil 3D.

  • Engage with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to deliver cost-effective and

innovative drainage solutions.

  • Oversee project deliverables, from feasibility studies through to detailed design and

construction support.

  • Manage technical risks, design constraints, and environmental considerations in

drainage design.

  • Assist in business development activities, including bid preparation and client

engagement.Who we’re looking for

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, or a related field.
  • Chartered status (CEng) or working towards chartership (ICE, CIWEM, or

equivalent).

  • Extensive experience in drainage design within the rail, highways, or infrastructure

sectors.

  • Proficiency in drainage design software (e.g., MicroDrainage, InfoWorks ICM, Civil

3D, Causeway Flow).

  • Strong understanding of Network Rail standards, SuDS, and UK drainage

regulations.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and deliver projects to tight deadlines.
  • Experience with flood risk assessments and hydraulic modelling.
  • Familiarity with BIM and digital engineering processes is desirable
