Job Description:

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Principal Telecoms Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Brisbane, Australia.

About the Position:

You will be responsible for the design, integration, and implementation of communications infrastructure projects encompassing IP/MPLS transport networks, radio sites, voice and data communication systems, fibre optic and copper-based transmission systems, and associated ancillary subsystems.

As a key member of the Communications Engineering team, you will lead the end-to-end engineering lifecycle of mission-critical communications networks, with a strong focus on the design, configuration, and integration of secure and highly available IP network solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop high-level and low-level design documentation, including architecture diagrams, network design reports, and integration procedures.
  • Configure, integrate, and test network equipment across multi-vendor platforms, primarily Cisco and Juniper routing and switching infrastructure. (Primarily Cisco ASR, Cisco Nexus, Juniper SRX, Fortinet firewalls.)
  • Perform site and factory acceptance testing, including pre-commissioning, commissioning, and network Migration activities.
  • Lead fault isolation, network diagnostics, and root cause analysis across transport and access layers.
  • Ensure network designs comply with safety, security, and redundancy requirements, especially in rail and mission-critical environments.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, contributing to skills development and knowledge transfer across the engineering team.
  • Produce technical documentation and implementation procedures in accordance with engineering standards and stakeholder requirements.

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Network Engineer with hands-on design, configuration, and integration experience in critical infrastructure environments.
  • Cisco CCNP and/or Juniper JNCIS/JNCIP certifications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Telecommunications, or related field), eligible for or holding full membership with Engineers Australia.
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on implementation experience with Cisco MPLS, BGP, and OSPF technologies, as well as Cisco Nexus platforms, including vPC, VDC, and data center architecture design.
  • Proven experience designing and deploying highly available, redundant network architectures for large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong experience with traffic engineering (MPLS TE/FRR), QoS, ACLs, and secure VPN design.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring engineering documents such as detailed designs, integration test plans, and technical change implementation procedures.
  • Experience working within rail communications, signalling networks, or similar operational technology (OT) environments is highly desirable.
  • Strong project experience with the ability to manage competing priorities, multitask effectively, and meet tight deadlines in fast-paced delivery environments.
