The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of History of Philosophy. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be named the Michael & Virginia Walsh Chair in the History of Philosophy for a five-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Philosophy or a closely related area, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. The successful candidate’s research will focus on the history of philosophy. Candidates with research programmes on topics in history of philosophy which are not already a focus of research by current faculty members in the department are particularly welcome.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees.

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the Faculty of Arts & Science’s undergraduate and graduate education in the history of philosophy.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and experience in research supervision will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto has three campuses, St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga, each with its own Department of Philosophy offering undergraduate programs. The advertised position is on the downtown St. George campus. The Graduate Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus department, consisting of philosophy faculty appointed on all three campuses. Graduate teaching and supervision typically take place on the St. George campus.
