Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Assistant – Ready to Farm Program for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Assists RUR2F program with phase 2 farm work days and farm maintenance during the week.
- Helps teach program phase 2 participants farming skills such as bed prep, soil testing, planting, harvesting, pruning, trellising, packing, and distribution.
- Assists with grading homework on the program Canvas site.
- Attends local agricultural conferences with the program team.
- Helps to promote the program and answer questions.
- Develops visual and promotional materials.
- Assists with programmatic content development.
- Assists with public-facing events such as annual Equipment Day.
- Reviews beginner farmer business plans with the program team to provide input and experiential advice.
FLSA Nonexempt
Salary Details $22.00 – $25.00/hourly

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in an agricultural-related field and two years of experience working on a small-scale diversified vegetable farm, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
- A valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledgeable of and skilled with farm maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning, trellising, harvesting, planting, etc.
- Knowledgeable in common plant pests and diseases.
- Knowledgeable in good farm management practices and growing methods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Comfortable working with Canvas.
Equipment Utilized
- BCS two-wheel tractor, Workman utility vehicle, various small farm hand tools.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50lbs.
