Job Title:

Project Manager

Department:

FAES jobsnear.org School of Environment and Natural Resources

Description:

The Ohio State University seeks a full-time project manager to implement and manage a farmer-led research and engagement project designed to improve the agronomic and economic performance and boost the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices in Ohio. The position is based on the OSU CFAES Wooster Campus. This 100% FTE position is 100% grant funded for 5-years.

About the Project:

The position is part of a recently funded USDA Sustainable Agricultural Systems (SAS) grant awarded to Ohio State University in partnership with Central State University, the University of Missouri, and Lincoln University. The overall project seeks to implement collaborative research and engagement activities with farmers, farm advisors, agency staff, and agribusiness firms to improve the agronomic and economic performance of climate-smart agricultural practices (CSAPs) designed to increase carbon sequestration, improve water quality, and address other environmental goals. These include the use of multi-species cover crops, extended and diversified crop rotations, utilization of manure to reduce fertilizer inputs, and better integration of livestock and crop production systems.

The premise of the project is that poor and variable on-farm performance of CSAPs is a major reason for the relatively low adoption rates of many CSAPS (despite extensive government and private sector funding to encourage their use). The project will establish a network of farmer-led on-farm research clusters to explore innovative approaches and document their impacts on agronomic, economic, and environmental outcomes under working farm conditions. We will also be engaging with other key actors (farm consultants/advisors, landlords, state and federal agency staff, nonprofit organizations) who provide input into farmer decisions about the use of CSAPs.

This position will provide key logistical support to the Project Director (Dr. Douglas Jackson-Smith) to design and implement this multifaceted project. They will be responsible for organizing project workgroup and advisory group meetings, tracking grant spending, coordinating reporting to grant agency, assisting with project communications, and participating in various leadership team meetings. The ideal candidate will have experience with large complex project management, familiarity with agriculture and environmental issues, and comfort and experience engaging with diverse farmers, academics, and stakeholders.

The project is directed by Dr. Douglas Jackson-Smith, a rural sociologist and Kellogg Chair and Director of the Agroecosystem Management Program in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at the Ohio State University. The office will be located on the OSU-CFAES, Wooster campus – an interdisciplinary research station 90 minutes north of Columbus in the heart of a vibrant rural and agricultural landscape.

Requires in-person on Wooster Campus as well as travel to Ohio locations as needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years’ experience in management of large, complex, multi-unit research and/or extension programs
  • Experience with fiscal management and tracking systems
  • Experience with grant administration
  • Experience in working with and managing relationships with stakeholder advisory boards
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Excellent computer (MS Office suite) and database management skills
  • Self-directed, can work alone or in team environment

Minimum Desired Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD degree in relevant agricultural, environmental, or social science
