In each city LUCA operates, an artistic research unit is active, linked to the art education programs. At the Visual Arts programme at Ghent campus, research is bundled in .   • As a research-assistant, you carry out a doctoral research project for 50% of your time, which you propose during your application. The PhD-proposal is based on an active practice in visual arts and it must be supported by a main supervisor linked to Reseach Unit Image, more specifically by one of the following: Arne De Winde, Chris Evans, Frank Maet, Hana Miletic, Annelies Monseré, Volkmar Mühleis, Jan Peeters or Esther Venrooij. The proposal must demonstrably constitute an innovative contribution to one of the

of RU Image and it must have an actual and significant relevance to one of the visual arts at stake in campus Ghent, i.e. , or . * You actively contribute to the development of the research cluster in which you are involved and you assist your main supervisor in organising research activities that strengthen the research environment (reading groups, symposia, research exhibitions, cluster meetings…)

  • You develop high-quality PhD-results and processes which you fittingly, loyally disseminate;
  • You actively participate in the research culture and activities of RU Image and interact with other researchers in the unit;
  • You independently look for funding to support the production of research cases if need be;
  • You develop an excellent and enriching research network, both academically and artistically;

Education (20%)

  • As a research assistant, you assist in carrying out pedagogical activities that are tailored to students in visual arts, including preparation and evaluation;
  • You contribute to components in the Ghent visual arts curriculum that might benefit from your research project and you actively look for opportunities to diseminate your research, its process and its outcomes to the educational environment;
  • You train visual arts students in the artistic and reflective components of their education;
  • You constructively cooperate with colleagues to enable an artistically stimulating, caring, up-to-date and inclusive pedagogical environment.

Profile

  • You hold a master degree in visual arts;
  • You are active as a visual artist, with demonstrable excellence in the field;
  • You have not started a self-sustained and accepted PhD-project for more than two years;
  • You like an intense interplay between action and reflection in your artistic practice;
  • You have the ambition and practical skills to become an excellent researcher in your artistic field and to share your insights about it in higher art education;
  • You feel at home in an environment that requires working and thinking independently, but you also enjoy seeking dialogue with others, both within and outside your discipline;
  • You are willing to communicate your research in teaching and on high-standard platforms;
  • You have didactic skills, preferably with relevant experience in higher education;
  • You are loyal to the mission, vision and educational policy plan of LUCA School of Arts.
  • You can express yourself fluently in Dutch and English in accordance with the language requirements applicable to Flemish higher education. At the start of the assignment as a doctoral assistant, you must have mastered the language of instruction at ECFR level B1. The administrative language in LUCA is Dutch. If you have no or insufficient knowledge of Dutch, LUCA provides a compulsory integration path with the aim of mastering Dutch at ECFR level B2 within 5 years of appointment.

OfferWe offer a statutory appointment (70%) in the vacant position of research-assistant (salary scale 502) for a fixed period of two years at LUCA School of Arts, RU Image, campus Visual Arts Ghent. The appointment can be extended twice, leading up to maximally six years, under the conditions of a positive evaluation.More information on salary scales can be found on the website of the Department of Education (www.ond.vlaanderen.be). The preferred start date is 15/10/2024.Candidates have obtained a master in visual arts at the time of application. The research proposal must be supported by a main supervisor connected to RU Image (see the list of names above and within the list of RU Image’s research clusters ), possibly extended with co-supervisors within the same unit or elsewhere.
