Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience in research farming or in general farm management.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training which includes six semester hours per year in agricultural courses, agronomy, animal or plant science, agribusiness, or vocational agricultural education will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

Experience in crop or livestock farming will substitute for the required experience on the basis of eighteen months for one year of experience.

NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:

To supervise activities on an experimental farming operation and perform managerial and administrative tasks in a large, diverse research farm environment.

Level of Work:

Manager.

Supervision Received:

Broad direction from a research administrator.

Supervision Exercised:

Line over lower level research farm personnel and lower level professional personnel.

Location of Work:

State Universities; Agricultural Research Facilities.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Research Farm Manager 1 by the presence of responsibilities for managing a very large farm with diverse research programs and for exercising supervisory responsibility over a large number of lower level farm specialist personnel and lower level professional personnel.

Examples of Work

Supervises and manages activities on a large and diverse experimental farming operation.

Meets with farm administrators and/or research projects leaders to discuss, plan, and coordinate diverse on-going or proposed projects in order to define tasks, personnel, equipment, and supplies needed, scheduling, and methodology to avoid conflicts and resolve problems; recommends changes or modification of experiments to save time, money and effort.

Keeps personnel records of time and attendance, approves or disapproves leave, accidents; assigns work, oversees accuracy and completeness of records completed by employees, trains employees, instructs employees in and supervises safety practices; completes accident reports.

Purchases supplies, equipment, tools, and repairs; sees that animals and/or plants are cared for on a scheduled basis.

Maintains facilities, designs, and directs construction or major repair projects by employees; operates, repairs, and maintains equipment, grounds, and buildings by supervising wiring, carpentry, plumbing, or similar repairs.
