Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in the care of animals; the general care of crops, shrubs, or plants; or farm-related equipment and machinery operation.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College credit in agricultural courses will substitute for the required experience on the basis of one semester hour for two months of experience.

NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

To assist with agricultural research in an experimental farm environment.

General from higher level personnel.

State Universities; Agricultural Research Facilities.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from a Research Farm Assistant 2 by requirements for understanding and knowledge of research techniques.

Differs from a Research Farm Specialist 2 by lack of requirements for evaluating and reporting conditions related to experiments.

Examples of Work

Mixes chemicals according to instructions on container label.

Lays out research plots, labels treatments for animals or plants, and assists with collection of data.

Precisely records and reports data and maintains accurate research records.

Performs more difficult tasks related to care of livestock including: mixing feed according to research specifications, evaluating health of animals, treating diseases, and checking progress, breeding animals, delivering young, collecting semen, candling eggs, and performing specialized milking and milk treatment operations.

From general instructions, cares for plants and trees including: germinating seed, transplanting seedling, pollinating flowers, and sexual and asexual propagation of plant materials.

Adjusts and maintains complex equipment and operates experimental plot equipment to establish, maintain, and harvest research plots with a high level of precision.

Performs comparable farming tasks in other agricultural research areas such as forestry, aquaculture, agricultural engineering, etc.

Performs related tasks as assigned.
