Moreover, the VUB is a member of EUTOPIA, an alliance of 10 like-minded European universities, all ten ready to reinvent themselves.The Research Group Brussels Center for Immunology (BCIM, Department of Bioengineering) consists of around 50 members (4 full-time professors, post-doc scientists, PhD students, technical and administrative staff…). Their research is based on employing cutting-edge molecular and cellular technologies, including an early adoption of single cell multi-omic analysis, the generation of novel transgenic mouse strains, and the strategic exploitation of camelid-derived single domain antibody fragments (nanobodies) as exquisite tools for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in various immunology-related diseases.We are looking for an employee to support cellular immunology-related research.You play a crucial role in supporting flow cytometry research and experiments and coordinating the flow cytometry instrument park, combined with laboratory support work.You report to Prof. Dr. Jo Van Ginderachter, head of BCIM.What will you be doing?Although your job will be dynamically filled, the following is certainly part of your duties:
- Management of the Flow Cytometry instrument park (coordination and planning of research assignments, monitoring of operation & maintenance of instruments, contact with suppliers…)
- Technical and logistical support for flow cytometry experiments on behalf of researchers and students
- Documenting, contributing to the refinement of protocols
- Laboratory work: performing and supporting cellular and molecular immunological work (cell culture, antibody production, genotyping, QRT-PCR, primer design…)
- Supporting the normal operation of the laboratory (e.g., maintaining cell line collection in liquid nitrogen, replenishing stocks of important products, refilling CO2 gas cylinders…)
- Training MSc and PhD students in the use of instruments
For this position, Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Ixelles) will be your home base. The start date is scheduled for December 2nd.What do we expect from you?
- You have a Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Techniques or equivalent, or a Master’s degree in Bioengineering Sciences, Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, or equivalent.
- Hands-on experience in performing flow cytometry experiments is a must; and preferably, you have experience working with different instruments
- You have experience with recent cellular and molecular immunological techniques and are willing to update yourself on new technologies.
- Working independently and accurately, not shying away from varying protocols, suits you well
- You enjoy serving your colleagues, researchers, and students, and your expertise creates significant added value.
- You can within a multidisciplinary dynamic team and are flexible and positively oriented.
- You have a very fluent knowledge of English, the working language of the research group
- You have a sense of initiative and work very organized.
- You are proficient in MS Office and quickly adapt to new software packages (e.g., electronic lab notebook, BD FACS-Diva, Cytek SprectroFlo, Flowjo, Booking scheduler,…)
- Finally, you have a work permit and can work in Belgium; the start date is scheduled for December 2nd
