Description of Work Unit
LOCATION: The San Luis Valley Research Center (SLVRC) is located in Center, Colorado, 9 miles north of Monte Vista, in the San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley is unique in that it is one of the largest, high altitude (7,600 ft.), irrigated crop production areas in the United States. The area is surrounded by 12,000-14,000 foot mountains.
ABOUT SAN LUIS VALLEY RESEARCH CENTER: The Colorado State University potato program is based at the San Luis Valley Research Center which is engaged in various potato research programs including breeding and selection, pathology, crop management and field physiology, postharvest physiology, and seed certification.
Faculty located at the SLVRC are members of an academic department at Colorado State University and report to the respective department head.

Position Summary
The Manager has authority and responsibility for management and stewardship of the financial resources, staff personnel, infrastructure (land, buildings, technology, etc.), and operational and administrative functions of the SLVRC to support faculty research, educational and outreach programs.This stewardship is exercised by planning, executing, and optimizing SLVRC resources and their deployment. This is a full-time, twelve-month, Administrative Professional position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. A signing bonus of up to $5,000 may be considered for successful candidates. Position reports to the Director of the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station or designee.
Required Job Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree, OR Associate’s degree plus two years of professional work experience, OR High School Diploma (or GED) plus four years of professional experience. Degree(s) and/or professional experience with an emphasis in field crop production.
- Professional experience in managing an entity involved in research, agricultural production or in a related commercial enterprise environment.
- Demonstrated ability and expertise for developing relationships and engaging in activities with diverse clientele, communities and stakeholders.
- Excellent written, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Current Colorado Commercial Qualified Supervisor Pesticide Applicator License, or a demonstrated ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
- Working knowledge and experience in the application of word processing, spreadsheet, and other farm management software.
- Experience in personnel management and supervision.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of this position which includes some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs during planting and harvest on a daily basis may be assisted by dolly/person), manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling.
- Ability to work in outdoor, environmental conditions such as inclement weather
- Commitment to professional conduct reflecting CSU’s Principles of Community.
- Experience in safe and proficient operation of farm and other heavy machinery such as tractors, harvesters, loaders, forklifts, and farm trucks.
- Knowledge and experience in crop production or other agribusiness enterprises.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completed Master’s Degree in an ag economics, agri-tech, crop science, life science or business administration related discipline.
- Experience developing and managing a budget.
- Experience in compliance with university, state and federal rules and regulations.
- Possess basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance and repair.
- Meaningful experience and participation in one or more agricultural research program(s), and an understanding of remote agricultural experiment stations mission and their challenges.
